Tom Scott on APIs

I was late to discover Tom Scott, it was only after he did his goodbye video that I came across him, but he is a Youtube treasure with an archive of a ton of good stuff. Here’s one where he ties together scraping, APIs, Web 2.0, privacy, Cliffs of Dover, and some philosophy. So beautiful.

  1. Gee, we couldn’t see that the four mantras of the internet (open, permissionless, settlement-free and anonymous) would get us to this point of enormous wealth, political, informational and cultural divides? The key to generative and sustainable interworking is the opposite of the above four. Defensible boundaries and bi-lateral settlements that provide incentives and disincentives as well as balancing value and costs can be implemented in ways that achieve much more than what those 4 mantras disingenuously promised. Imagine a more efficient ecosyst em providing universal access to information and discourse.

  2. He’s quintessentially British and brilliant. He features on Computerphile which you may also appreciate on YouTube.

  3. I’ve been following Tom from his early days on YouTube. His main channel + his panel show Citation Needed are superb.
