  • In March 1954, the United States tested a hydrogen bomb on the Bikini Atoll, and radioactive fallout covered a large area of the sea, hundreds of people were injured by radiation;
    Ø In September 1957, the nuclear waste tank of Mayak nuclear plant near the town of Kashtum in the Soviet Union exploded, and countless local residents were exposed to severe radiation;
    Ø In October 1957, the reactor of Wentskell Plant in England caught fire, causing the first major nuclear reactor accident in history;
    In March 1979, the radiation leakage of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station in the United States forced hundreds of thousands of residents in six surrounding counties to evacuate;
    In April 1986, the No. 4 reactor of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station exploded, causing the most serious nuclear accident in history;
    In March 2011, Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was hit by a tsunami, and four reactors exploded one after another. The impact has continued to this day.
    Will the story that happened in Chernobyl only happen in Chernobyl?
    After Chernobyl, Shahili Ploki, a chair professor of Ukrainian history at Harvard University, reviewed the issue of nuclear energy again and tried to find the root cause of nuclear disaster from the six landmark nuclear accidents in history. With careful and rigorous investigation, he analyzed the technical and human factors of six accidents; With a literary style, it represents the soul stirring disaster process; With the care of historians, the various characters in the accident were observed in the historical context, showing the various attitudes of the government, nuclear industry practitioners, the media and the public under the shadow of radiation; With the keenness of scholars, we explore the political, social and cultural factors that are really worth paying attention to besides the accident.
