The moon is sometimes round and sometimes curved, because its orbit around the earth is elliptical. When the moon revolves around the earth to the farthest position from the earth, the moon we see will become a curved shape, which is called "first quarter moon" or "last quarter moon", because they only show half of the moon. When the moon revolves around the earth to the nearest position from the earth, the moon we see will become a round shape, which is called the "full moon". At other times, the moon we see will show different degrees of curved shape, which is called "moon phase". The change of the moon phase is caused by the continuous change of the relative position between the moon's orbit around the earth and the earth and the sun.
