According to the provisions of relevant laws in China, the debt is borne by the debtor himself, so the daughter-in-law is not responsible for paying the debts of the mother-in-law, but if the daughter-in-law inherits the inheritance of the mother-in-law, she shall bear the debt to the extent of inheritance.
General Principles of the Civil Law of the People's Republic of China
Article 84 A debt is a specific relationship of rights and obligations between the parties as agreed in a contract or as stipulated by law. The person who enjoys the rights is the creditor, and the person who has the obligations is the debtor.
The creditor has the right to require the debtor to perform its obligations in accordance with the contract or the law.
Article 33 In inheriting an estate, the decedent shall pay taxes and debts according to law, and the payment of taxes and debts shall be limited to the actual value of his estate. This restriction does not apply to the part exceeding the actual value of the estate that the heir voluntarily repays.
If a successor waives inheritance, he may not be liable for the taxes and debts that the decedent should pay according to law.
