    The duty of maintenance may be exempted in accordance with the corresponding circumstances. Circumstances under which the maintenance obligation is relieved:

    1. Unmarried or divorced adult children have no economic income, lose labor force or cannot live independently;

    2. Married adult children have no economic income themselves, and their family income is not enough to maintain the basic local living standard;

    3. Parents commit serious crimes against their children.

    [Legal Basis]

    Article 1067 of the Civil Code states that if parents fail to perform their obligations of upbringing, minor children or adult children who cannot live independently have the right to require their parents to pay maintenance fees. Adult children who fail to perform their obligations of support, parents who lack the ability to work or who are in difficulty in life, have the right to demand that adult children pay alimony.
