2. Soochow University, formerly Soochow University founded in 1900, is the first university in China to establish a modern university discipline system. Soochow University is the first university in China to carry out professional education in law (British and American law), the first to carry out graduate education and award master's degrees. It is also the first university in China to establish a journal. In 1952, the College of Arts and Sciences of Soochow University, the School of Culture and Education of South Jiangsu, and the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Jiangnan University were merged to form South Jiangsu Normal College, which was renamed Jiangsu Normal College in the same year. In 1982, the school was renamed Suzhou University. Later, Suzhou Sericulture College (1995), Suzhou Silk Engineering College (1997) and Suzhou Medical College (2000) were merged into Suzhou University.
