Construction background:
The Wujiaba International Airport previously used in Kunming was built in 1922. After three times of reconstruction and expansion, the designed capacity of the terminal has reached 8 million person times. However, in 2008 alone, the passenger throughput of Wujiaba Airport reached 15.28 million person times, and from 2010 to 2019 million person times, far exceeding the designed capacity of the existing terminal. The airport is under great operational pressure. Moreover, Wujiaba Airport is only 6.6 kilometers away from the center of Kunming in a straight line. Surrounded by cities, it does not have the conditions to expand in situ. Therefore, the Kunming Municipal Government has decided to build a new airport.
