The construction of the Wild Goose Pagoda was closely related to Xuanzang. In the 19th year of Zhenguan in the Tang Dynasty, Xuanzang returned to Chang'an with 657 scriptures, eight Buddhist statues and a large number of Buddhist relics. In the 23rd year of Zhenguan period, the Great Ci'en Temple was completed. Xuanzang was the first person to preside over the temple and build the Big Wild Goose Pagoda to collect the relics, Buddha statues and scriptures brought back from India.
