Sometimes we encounter the situation that Chinese papers need to be translated into English, but we are not professional translators, and our English ability is also average. At this time, we will be very upset, and do not know what to do. In fact, there are skills in translating papers into English. Next, AEIC will introduce you to the skills you can use in translating papers into English.
1. Deconstructing Long Sentences with Analytical Structure Method
The language expression of scientific papers is objective, accurate, logical and rigorous. In order to better record the phenomena of nature and the dynamics of scientific and technological circles, the sentences used in scientific and technological papers are often long and complex in structure. For example, there are many modifiers in a sentence, including multiple clauses or phrases. Therefore, the translation of long sentences has become a difficult problem in translation. Therefore, in the process of translation, the translator is required to analyze and clarify the sentence structure, find out the central meaning of the whole sentence, and on the basis of accurate understanding, clarify the relationship between each clause, and split long sentences.
2. Use of passive voice
Scientific papers themselves are scientific, emphasizing narration and reasoning. Because readers value the author's opinions and inventions rather than the author himself, they usually do not use the first or second person. Moreover, because the conclusions of the paper are based on a large number of experimental data or a large number of investigations, the passive voice is often used to show its objectivity. Words like "as is known to all" cannot appear.
3. The use of a large number of noun structures
Because the accuracy of scientific papers requires concise writing, objective expression, large amount of information, and emphasis on existing facts rather than a certain behavior, noun structures can be widely used in the process of translating scientific papers.
4. Application of Attributive Clause
There is no change in the form of words in Chinese, and the relationship between various constituent words in a sentence is mainly expressed and maintained by word order. English is different. Due to the needs of grammar, rhetoric and sentence structure, the word order of some sentence elements changes. In particular, the position of the attribute in the sentence is very flexible, which is very different from Chinese. Therefore, attention should be paid to the adjustment of word order in the process of translation. In this process, attributive clauses will be widely used.
5. Application of Non finite Verbs
As mentioned above, scientific and technological articles require concise writing and compact structure. For this reason, participle phrases are often used instead of attributive or adverbial clauses, participle independent structures are used instead of adverbial clauses or coordinate clauses, infinitive phrases are used instead of various clauses, and prepositions+gerund phrases are used instead of attributive or adverbial clauses. This can shorten sentences and make them more eye-catching.
