Origin of Mother's Day
Mother's Day originated in the United States. The initiator of this festival is Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia native. This woman has never married and has no children. On May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis's mother died tragically. She was very sad. On the anniversary of his mother's death the following year, Jarvis organized a memorial activity for his mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their mothers in a similar way.
Jarvis wrote to Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, asking for a special memorial service for her mother. Her mother served the Sunday school of this church for more than 20 years. In 1908, the church declared Jarvis's mother's death the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Jarvis also organized a Mother's Day Committee to start large-scale publicity, calling for Mother's Day to be designated as a legal holiday.
Her appeal received a warm response. On May 10, 1913, the United States Senate and the House of Representatives passed a resolution, which was signed by President Wilson, deciding that the second Sunday in May of each year was Mother's Day. This move has caused countries around the world to follow suit. By 1948, when Jarvis Xie Shih, 43 countries had set up Mother's Day.
