Liaoning Province, referred to as Liao for short, is the capital of Shenyang. It has jurisdiction over 14 prefecture level cities, including 2 sub provincial cities. It is located in the south of Northeast China, bordering the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea in the south, separated from Korea in the east by a river, and facing Japan and South Korea across the sea. It is the only province in Northeast China that is both coastal and border provinces, and also the gateway to the opening up of Northeast China and eastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Liaoning is an important old industrial base in China, one of the provinces with a relatively complete range of industries in China, one of the first coastal provinces to implement the opening-up policy, one of the earliest provinces to open ports in modern China, one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation and civilization, and the cradle of the rise of new China's industry. It is known as the eldest son of the Republic and the Oriental Ruhr. The 12th National Games was held in Liaoning on August 31, 2013. The mascot is the spotted seal Ningning.
