What is a lightning arrester? What is a surge protector? It must be clear to the electrical personnel who have been engaged in the electrical industry for many years. However, when it comes to the difference between lightning arresters and surge protective devices, many electrical personnel may not be able to tell the difference for a while, especially for some electrical beginners. We all know that lightning arrester is an electrical appliance used to protect electrical equipment from the harm of high transient overvoltage during lightning stroke, and to limit the freewheeling time and often limit the freewheeling amplitude. Lightning arrester is sometimes called overvoltage protector or overvoltage limiter.
The surge protective device (SPD), which we often say is the right lightning protector, is an electronic device that provides security protection for various electronic equipment, instruments and communication lines. When spike current or voltage is suddenly generated in the electrical circuit or communication line due to external interference, it can conduct shunt in a very short time, so as to avoid the damage of surge to other equipment in the circuit. So, what's the difference between lightning arrester and surge protector? Next, we will compare the five major differences between lightning arrester and surge protector, so that you can thoroughly understand the respective functions of lightning arrester and surge protection. After reading the article, I hope to deepen the understanding of lightning arresters and surge protective devices for electrical personnel.
? 01 Functions of surge protector and lightning arrester
1. Surge protector: surge protector is also called surge protector, low-voltage power supply lightning protector, lightning protector, SPD, etc. It is an electronic device that provides safety protection for various electronic equipment, instruments and communication lines. It is an electronic device that provides safety protection for various electronic equipment, instruments and communication lines. When the electrical circuit or communication line suddenly generates peak current or voltage due to external interference, the surge protector can conduct shunt in a very short time, so as to avoid the damage of surge to other equipment in the circuit.
In addition to being used in the power field, surge protector is also very necessary in other fields. As a protective device, it ensures that the equipment can reduce the impact of surge during the connection process.
2. Arrester: It is a lightning protection device used to protect electrical equipment from the harm of high transient overvoltage during lightning stroke, and limit the duration of freewheeling current, and also limit the amplitude of freewheeling current. The arrester is sometimes called an over-voltage arrester.
Lightning arrester is an electrical device that can release lightning or simultaneously release the operating overvoltage energy of the power system, protect the electrical equipment from the harm of transient overvoltage, and cut off the aftercurrent so as not to cause the grounding short circuit of the system. A lightning protection device connected between the conductor and the ground, usually in parallel with the protected equipment. Arrester can effectively protect electric equipment. Once abnormal voltage occurs, the arrester will play a protective role. When the voltage is normal, the arrester will quickly return to its original state to ensure the normal power supply of the system.
Arrester can be used not only to protect against atmospheric high voltage, but also to protect against operating high voltage. In case of thunderstorm weather, high voltage will appear due to lightning and thunder, and electrical equipment may be in danger. At this time, lightning arrester will work to protect electrical equipment from damage. The biggest and most important function of lightning arrester is to limit overvoltage to protect electrical equipment.
Lightning arrester is a device that allows lightning current to flow into the earth, so that electrical equipment will not produce high voltage. The main types of lightning arrester include pipe type lightning arrester, valve type lightning arrester and zinc oxide lightning arrester. The main working principle of each type of arrester is different, but their work is essentially the same, all to protect electrical equipment from damage.
? 02 Difference between lightning arrester and surge protector
1. Applicable voltage levels are different
Arrester: the arrester has multiple voltage levels, ranging from 0.38KV low voltage to 500KV ultra-high voltage;
Surge protective device (SPD): SPD has low-voltage products with multiple voltage levels from AC 1000V to DC 1500V.
2. Different systems installed
Arrester: it is mostly installed on the primary system to prevent direct invasion of lightning waves;
Surge protective device (SPD): installed on the secondary system, is a supplementary measure after the arrester eliminates the direct invasion of lightning waves, or when the arrester does not eliminate lightning waves completely.
3. Different installation positions
Lightning arrester: generally installed at the high-voltage cabinet in front of the transformer (usually installed in the incoming circuit or outgoing circuit of the high-voltage distribution cabinet, that is, in front of the transformer);
Surge protector: SPD is installed in the low-voltage distribution cabinet behind the transformer (usually installed at the incoming line of the low-voltage distribution cabinet, i.e. the outgoing line of the transformer).
4. Different appearance and size
Arrester: connected to the electrical primary system, it should have sufficient external insulation performance and large appearance size;
Surge protector: It can be very small because it is connected to low-voltage system.
5. Different grounding modes
Lightning arrester: general direct grounding mode;
Surge protector: SPD is connected to PE line.
