It has been 22 years since the USB flash drive appeared in 1998. It is time to discuss how long it can store data.
The 20-year patent of the USB flash disk also expired on November 14, 2019, which means that Shenzhen Lonke Technology has received a 20-year protection fee based on the patent of the USB flash disk. Fourth rate enterprises sell coolies, third rate enterprises sell products, second rate enterprises sell patents, and first-class enterprises sell standards. It can be seen that not everyone has the ability to sell patents and standards. Think about how much money can be made from a large number of U disks.
Since ancient times, there have been many kinds of media for storing information, such as stone, shell, tortoise shell, bone, rope, copper, iron, bamboo slips, silk, paper, disk, optical disk, hard disk, etc., but so far, people have found that the longest media for storing information is stone, and the information recorded from the stone can smell the ancient marks thousands of years ago.
In today's information explosion, the data storage of computers has changed from punch cards that can record very few instructions at first to TB as the daily storage unit (the storage unit of computers generally includes B KB、MB、GB、TB、PB、EB、ZB、YB、BB)、 Take ZB as the network throughput.
1KB=1024B;
1MB=1024KB;
1GB=1024MB;
1TB=1024GB;
1PB=1024TB;
And so on.
Many people will wonder whether modern storage media are reliable, and how many years can it last? After all, we haven't found any information that is older than the information recorded on the stone, and what will happen to more and more data we store in the end?
In fact, since we started collecting and demonstrating data, we began to make different forms of media to store them. Each new invention will move towards greater convenience, more storage space and longer service life. However, things always work bad one day.
As the name implies, the USB stick was originally inserted into the USB interface of the computer. Generally, there are at least two ICs on the USB stick. The larger one, which is farther from the USB interface, is the flash memory chip, which is usually packaged with TSOP48 or BGA. The other one is the USB stick master. Sometimes, the power supply circuit and crystal oscillator are integrated in the master control. The speed of the USB flash drive is limited by the main control performance of the USB flash drive, the dual MLC NAND performance, and the supported USB protocol.
The flash memory of the USB flash disk is really used to store data. Usually, the firmware and file system information of the USB flash disk are also located in the flash memory. Before leaving the factory, the manufacturer will write firmware and initialize the USB flash disk in batches. At present, the flash memory used by most of the USB flash disks on the market is similar to the flash memory in the solid state disk.
There are three main types of flash memory:
- SLC (Single Level Cell), 1 bit/cell, fast speed, long life, expensive price, about 100000 erasure life.
- MLC (Multi Level Cell), 2 bit/cell, average speed, average life, average price, about 3000-10000 erasure life.
- TLC (Triple Level Cell), 3 bit/cell, and some flash memory manufacturers call it 8LC. It is slow in speed, short in life, and cheap in price. It usually has about 500-1000 erasure lives.
SLC, MLC, and TLC are quite different. Generally, manufacturers do not mark the types of chips, and some downgraded chips are often used to make USB flash disks. This directly leads to the uneven quality and service life of USB flash drives. Some people's USB flash drives may still be used for several years, and some people's USB flash drives may fail after several times of use.
In addition, we often directly hot plug without using the "Safely Delete USB Device", which causes the USB flash disk to flash to the old waist. The next time we use it, we will be prompted that data is lost (incomplete), the device cannot be recognized, it must be formatted before use, and the sector needs to be repaired.
summary The data in the USB flash disk has remained static for several years. It is found that only a few computers can still be used. Most USB flash disks suddenly break down or are lost when they are used. Data is priceless. It is recommended to back up important data with multiple storage media.
