In the summer vacation of 2023, I returned to my hometown to attend the reunion of Class 5 and Class 6 of the 93rd class of Yunhe Middle School, where I once taught, and met my student Wei Shirong. He is now the deputy director of Yunhe Archives. He has access to Yunhe and many important historical documents due to his work and business, so he edited the book Yunhe Past. He asked me to write a preface, and I gladly promised.
There are many gains, many regrets, and many revelations when you browse Cloud and the Past. Cloud and the Past has a long time span, but the collected materials are concise; Most of the pages are short, but the language is plain and readable. It is a rare book to understand the history of Yunhe in modern times, which shows the dedication, professionalism and hard work of the editor in chief.
Throughout the book, there are two chapters. The first one is "Historical Memory between Lines". From the perspective of time span, we collected the major and minor events that took place in Yunhe from 1902 to 1949 and the reports on Yunhe in the publications at that time for nearly half a century. From the perspective of data sources, most of them came from newspapers and magazines at that time, including Xinhua News Agency, Ethnic Daily, Southeast Daily, Kuocang, Yunhe News, and Yunhe Express. From the identity of the author, most of them are officials, cadres and civil servants working in Yunhe, such as Huang Shaohong, the former chairman of the provincial government, Pan Yichen, the county magistrate, Chen Lifu, the general of the Kuomintang, and Jian Bingyi, the journalist. There are also foreign clergy, such as Father McGilliffrey, Father Morrison, and various people. From the perspective of article genre, there are telegrams, short letters, communications, appointment orders, investigation reports, patrol reports, essays, poems, words, and of course, extremely precious black and white photos. From the content of the data, it is really extensive, which can be described as omnipotent. There are industrial and commercial aspects, such as mining Meiyuan iron ore, preparing to set up a camphor factory, and handling telegraph business on behalf of others; There are agricultural aspects, such as the transportation and marketing of cloud and snow pears, and rice pests; In terms of government affairs, such as the relocation of the temporary provincial capital to Yunhe, the strict handling of the smoking ban, and the division of the lion elephant village boundary; In terms of education, such as the relocation of Yingshi University to Yunnan, the completion of Zhejiang Nursing Home, the inspection tour of county level simple teachers, and the appointment of the president of Yunhe Middle School; There are military aspects, such as the condolences to the able-bodied men who went to war, the ceremony of entering the ancestral temple for the soldiers who died in the anti Japanese war, and Chen Jiageng leaving Zhejiang to Fujian; There are customs, such as Yunhe marriage, She people's customs, Yunhe "Peng" (Qingming rice); There are scenic spots, such as Shishan scenery, Yunhe early winter, Yunhe night scenery, summer park
The second part of the book, "Traces of Time in Black and White Light and Shadow", is a precious photo. The photos recorded people's social life, study and work, places of interest and historic sites, and national customs at that time... Most of these photos were unprecedented, which enriched my image perception of my hometown Yunhe and deepened my understanding of Yunhe. They are invaluable.
After watching Yunhe Past, I was even more shocked by the period when the Provisional Provincial Government of the Anti Japanese War moved to Yunhe, which had a profound impact on the development of Yunhe. This is a hard time. The Chinese nation has been devastated. Japanese enemy planes flew into the clouds and bombed wildly! This is a glorious history. The Chinese people fought bravely against the enemy and dedicated themselves to saving the nation! This is an infiltration of modern civilization. The foreign cadres and masses have brought an open concept and a new way of life, and enlightened the simple mountain people! This is a vigorous education development movement. Yunhe's education has developed by leaps and bounds by moving to universities, strengthening middle schools, revitalizing primary schools and running kindergartens!
I am Yunhe. I am the son of a farmer who grew up drinking Yunhe water. Because of the reform and opening up, I have more responsibility to publicize Yunhe when I read and enter the university and walk on the platform of the university. I majored in Chinese language and literature. I was originally interested in local literature and history. When I worked in Lishui University, I also wrote several short articles introducing Chuzhou, Yunhe, literature and history figures. After being transferred to Wenzhou University, due to the busy work, we are now approaching retirement, or we will have more free time after retirement. We should do some practical things for Yunhe, our hometown, and write a few articles praising Yunhe, who has beautiful scenery and outstanding people.
