A few days ago, such a scene "vivid marine world" was brought to the eyes of children in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Yang Weidi, a senior engineer from the School of Oceans and Earth of Xiamen University, led us to observe marine life "on the spot" through the form of online "cloud class".
Most of these children were born and grew up on the Loess Plateau and never touched the sea. It is the Ningxia Graduate Education Group of Xiamen University (hereinafter referred to as the "Education Group") of Fujian and Ningxia that provides such an opportunity. The volunteer group launched the "Nanqiang Famous Teacher Cloud Lecture", invited experts and professors from different industries to offer colorful courses, and opened a window for rural children to the outside world.
Since 1999, Xiamen University has continuously sent graduate student support groups to Haiyuan County, Longde County, Pengyang County, Yongning County and other places in Ningxia to carry out education assistance. Over the past 25 years, 312 volunteer teachers have set foot on this land which was once called "one of the areas unsuitable for human survival" by the United Nations Food Development Agency to carry out a relay education assistance.

Tang Xiaoyu, the head of the 25th Youth League and a student majoring in sociology at Xiamen University, is in Guanqiao Middle School, Guanqiao Township, Haiyuan County. He chose to volunteer because of a story about "this little fish cares" - in the morning after the storm, there were many small fish trapped in shallow water on the beach, and a little boy picked up the fish and threw them into the sea. Someone advised him: "Can you save so many fish? Who cares?" The little boy answered while picking up the fish: "This little fish cares! This one also cares! And this one..."
Tang Xiaoyu is determined to be the little boy who picks up fish on the beach. In his senior year, he joined the volunteer group. "This little fish cares" is not just a story. It has become a public welfare brand project of Xiamen University's graduate education support group award. Over the past 20 years, it has raised more than 13 million yuan in grants, funded more than 22000 students in need, rescued two children with congenital heart disease, and initiated the donation of hardware facilities such as Hope Primary School, playground, and book corner.
As one of the few local English teachers, Tang Xiaoyu found that local children have a natural fear and shyness of English. In order to encourage children to actively participate in the classroom, he introduced the learning points system. As long as certain learning points are accumulated, there can be a lottery. These prizes were carefully selected by Tang Xiaoyu, such as small bookmarks, small red flags, small cards, and non-material rewards he set up to encourage children: mutual praise among students, "English class representatives" of the day, etc.
Since these college students came to the county, the courses of local schools have become colorful, students' horizons have become wider and wider, and their personalities have become more and more cheerful. The volunteer teaching group also carried out a number of group learning and student assistance work, such as "colorful holiday", "phoenix flower class", "art watcher" and other second class brand activities, and established student associations such as choir, national flag class, radio station, etc., to serve the growth and all-round development of children in the volunteer teaching area.
In July last year, Luo Ye became a member of the volunteer teaching group, started a one-year volunteer teaching career, and chose Guanqiao Middle School, the most difficult of all volunteer teaching places.
From Xiamen to Xi'an and then to Haiyuan County, looking at the scenery outside the window, from the bustling city to the loess filled mountain village, Luo Ye is quietly determined to do something for it. In Guanqiao Middle School, Luo Ye is responsible for the English teaching of two classes. The teaching task is not easy. In addition, the students' English foundation here is relatively weak. He spends a lot of time preparing lessons and writing teaching plans every day, starting from the most basic phonetic symbols.
"I am a window for them to see the outside world, hoping to plant a seed in their hearts to see the outside world." Pan Yuan, a member of the volunteer education group and music education major of Xiamen University, went to Guyuan Longde County No. 4 Middle School to work as a seventh grade music teacher, responsible for the music teaching tasks of 10 classes. Many students in this school are ethnic minorities. Pan Yuan found that they have strong musical talents and good voice conditions, but the local aesthetic education resources are not enough, and the children lack some professional training.
So Pan Yuan and the local music teacher formed a choir for the children, and the students who wanted to sign up surrounded the music classroom. Most of the students have not received professional training, and they can hardly understand music scores, and the pronunciation of Putonghua is not very standard. Pan Yuan taught them to sing word by word and corrected their intonation and pronunciation repeatedly. Often after a rehearsal, Pan Yuan lost his voice. Soon after, Pan Yuan and the children of the choir won the first place in the county choir competition.
Later, a student led by Pan Yuan was admitted to the kindergarten teacher major of a local college. The student told Pan Yuan, "In every class, I always remember the scene of rehearsal in the choir. In those days, the teachers of the volunteer education group not only imparted knowledge, but also ignited everyone's yearning for a better life. I also hope to become a person like a teacher.".
Pan Yuan likes to call himself a "front-line fisherman". During the year of volunteer teaching in Longde County, she and four teammates traveled around the villages around Longde to help children with financial difficulties. With the help of enterprises and caring people, they raised a total of 126300 yuan in donations, enabling 261 students from economically disadvantaged families to study at school.
Over the past 25 years, under the influence of successive teaching groups, the students taught by the members of the teaching group have continued to write the realistic version of "mountain and sea feelings" in the new era.
