Global WeChat News: Deputy Director General of WTO Bogan Emphasizes Strengthening Cooperation to Resolve the Food Crisis

(Data map)

On November 3, Deputy Director General of WTO Pogang attended the meeting of OECD agricultural ministers and made a speech, stressing that the joint efforts of WTO and other international institutions will help ease the upward pressure on food prices, but more efforts are needed to deal with the future crisis. At the same time, Bogang warned that the practice of imposing export restrictions on grain is spreading to products other than oilseeds and grains, and the implementation of the above restrictions beyond emergencies may become a new problem.

Bogan said that the WTO has made four contributions to the global food crisis, namely, maintaining market transparency, ensuring market openness, providing assistance to the most vulnerable countries and promoting trade distorting agricultural policy reform. Bogan called on the WTO to strengthen cooperation with other international institutions, ease the upward pressure on food prices, and prevent and resolve the future food crisis through collective efforts.
