Former title: Egyptian Foreign Minister's First Visit to Iran to Attend the Funeral of the Late President Leahy and Others
Xinhua News Agency, Cairo, May 22 (Reporter Dong Xiuzhu) On the 22nd, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on social media that Egyptian Foreign Minister Shu Kaili arrived in Tehran, the Iranian capital, the same day to attend the funerals of the victims of the helicopter accident, including the late Iranian President Lehi and Foreign Minister Abdullahian.
According to Iran's Tasnim News Agency, this is the first time that Egypt sent a foreign minister to Iran after breaking off diplomatic relations with Iran in 1980.
Earlier in the day, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that Egypt was united with Iran at this sad moment.
After the two countries broke off diplomatic relations, Egypt and Iran only set up interest representative offices in each other's countries to handle diplomatic affairs. Recently, bilateral relations have improved. During the 15th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held earlier this month, Shukairi and Abdullahian exchanged views on improving bilateral relations.
Lehi and others were killed when their helicopter crashed in the mountains of northwest Iran on the 19th. The Iranian government announced a five-day national mourning on the 20th.
