Construction company: invested by upstream and downstream enterprises

The new energy storage is similar to the "power bank". It is charged when wind power and photovoltaic power are generated at high power or when power consumption is low, and wind and light resources are intermittently weakened or discharged when power consumption is peak. In recent years, the new energy storage application scenario has gradually expanded from the initial peak shaving and valley filling of power system to new energy grid connection, micro grid and other fields, and the application scale has continued to grow significantly.

In March 2023, Guangdong issued the Guiding Opinions of Guangdong Province on Promoting the High Quality Development of New Energy Storage Industry, which clearly proposed to build the new energy storage industry into a strategic pillar industry of Guangdong's "manufacturing industry leader". The guideline sets the goal that by 2027, the operating revenue of Guangdong's new energy storage industry will exceed one trillion yuan.

"The new energy storage industry has a broad market and huge development potential." Wei Qijia, a fellow member of the research team and a researcher of the National Information Center, believes that this will also open up new space for Guangdong's high-quality development in the future industry.

In November 2023, it was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to establish the only national manufacturing innovation center in the field of new energy storage in China and settled in Baiyun District, Guangzhou.

China Southern Power Grid Science and Technology Corporation led a joint venture with 13 leading enterprises in the upstream and downstream of the new energy storage industry chain, such as Datang Group, China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage and Yiwei Lithium Energy, to establish a mixed ownership enterprise - Guangdong New Energy Storage National Research Institute Co., Ltd. The shareholders cover upstream and downstream leading backbone enterprises such as new energy storage industrial chain materials, batteries, switches and sensors, system integration, investment and operation, and echelon utilization.

Wei Qijia believes that "the establishment of a physical company operation carrier and the construction of a new innovation carrier can effectively promote the deep integration of innovation chain, industry chain, capital chain and talent chain."

Creating alliances: solving common problems

Yang Qiang, president of Yuntao Hydrogen Energy, introduced that six of the eight core components of the hydrogen fuel cell engine system they produced have been localized, and the production cost has also been greatly reduced.

"We have reduced the system cost from 5000 yuan per kilowatt to 2500 yuan now." Yang Qiang said frankly that to achieve this step, it is not enough for enterprises to fight alone. Only by combining the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain and universities can we accelerate the large-scale application of hydrogen fuel cells.

Safety, economy and efficiency are common technical problems in the new energy storage industry. In order to solve the pain points and difficulties in the development of the industry, the Energy Storage Innovation Center has established a new energy storage industry technology innovation alliance. Its members include 75 enterprises, universities, research institutes and superior resource units, a national innovation platform covering more than 85% of the new energy storage field, and a technical expert committee composed of 12 academicians and experts.

Li Shujie introduced that the Energy Storage Innovation Center is focusing on large-scale energy storage technology and equipment with large capacity, high safety, long life and high efficiency, focusing on five major fields, including electrochemical energy storage, mechanical energy storage, superconducting energy storage, thermal energy storage and hydrogen energy storage, as well as three large-scale support technologies, including whole process safety, accurate energy management and control, and innovative intelligent regulation, to carry out research and development of key common technologies Transfer and diffusion of achievements and first commercial application.

Platform building: open up the "last mile"

This charging station can also use the vehicle power battery to store energy for the power grid, and realize peak shaving, valley filling, power grid stabilization and other functions. "In the future, local micro grids and virtual power plants will be formed through the unified management and intelligent dispatching of station photovoltaic, energy storage, vehicle charging and discharging," Lai Dingqi, deputy general manager of Shenzhen Bus New Energy Co., Ltd., told reporters.

"With the continuous emergence of application scenarios, the iterative upgrading of technical equipment is also accelerating." Wei Qijia believes that to achieve industrialization and scale of new energy storage, it is necessary to establish a collaborative innovation platform for the whole chain and process.

On the 200 mu construction site in Baiyun District of Guangzhou Airport, machines are roaring. This is the new energy storage industry university research cooperation innovation base under construction. Li Shujie introduced that the base is supported by Guangdong Power Grid to build a 220kV substation, which is the only energy storage system testing and live verification platform in China at present. It is expected to complete the basic functional layout by the end of the year.

Li Shujie believes that the industry university research cooperation innovation base can test and obtain the actual functional performance index data such as the efficiency and safety of various new energy storage systems such as lithium ion and compressed air under the unified dispatching of the power grid. Compared with the test data "running" from the laboratory in the past, the data generated in this real scene can open up the "last mile" from scientific and technological innovation to industrial innovation.

At present, the Energy Storage Innovation Center is building eight R&D laboratories, eight testing and certification laboratories, three pilot test certification platforms, and a "1+N" scientific research demonstration base in ten directions in five fields of new energy storage, and building a platform covering the complete innovation chain of R&D, testing, pilot test and demonstration.

"Openness, sharing and cooperation are important labels of the energy storage innovation center. In the future, the laboratory, hardware infrastructure and other resources on the platform will be open and shared, providing a full chain of services from laboratory to industrialization for new energy storage enterprises and entrepreneurial teams nationwide and globally, so as to accelerate the formation of new energy storage and new quality productivity industrial clusters." Li Shujie said.
