"The strongest brain" of welding robot (theme)

In Zhejiang Qianjiang Robot Co., Ltd., welding engineer Wang Yang's life revolves around "debugging, testing and readjustment". Different from the traditional welding process, Wang Yang can command the robot arm to perform the welding task only by entering instructions in the "human-machine interface". The hands of industrial robots have already "extended" to the field of welding, and Wang Yang is the practitioner and witness.

Wang Yang has been working for more than ten years. Through day after day's research and practice, he has written his own "wisdom". He said: "The process is interlinked. The transformation from man to machine is not only the iteration of technology, but also the inheritance of knowledge and experience."

Step into the professional threshold

The extensive practice in his student days paved the way for Wang Yang to technological innovation. After joining the company, Wang Yang adhered to the combination of theory and practice, continued to explore and deepen, and applied the accumulated experience to higher level challenges.

In 2012, Wang Yang participated in the research, development and production of the manual argon arc welding process for titanium alloys above 40mm in the Jiaolong submersible, a national major project. The R&D team composed of three people has thoroughly understood the properties of various materials of titanium alloys, selected suitable welding wires and carried out a large number of tests and verifications through extensive access to domestic and foreign literature. In the end, manual argon arc welding is used throughout the process to tackle key problems.

Argon arc welding technology is not easy. The first difficulty is stability.

Wang Yang said that the thickness of the sample was 54 cm, and the welding process took five or six hours, or even longer, but the hands should always be stable during the welding process. "Jitter will lead to slag inclusion. Even at the last step, if there is a small mistake, you must start again."

None of the techniques can make up for the defect of poor basic skills. This project made Wang Yang face up to his basic skills again, and he began to practice hard. In order to make the training effect more obvious, he wrapped a rope around his wrist, and an iron block hung on the other end of the rope. At first, he could only hold out for half an hour. Half a year later, this time has become more than 6 hours.

Looking back on this experience, Wang Yang regrets that this hard and substantial learning and practice has become a valuable asset in his career.

Grow up with welding robot

In 2013, Zhejiang Qianjiang Robot Co., Ltd. was established, and Wang Yang was transferred to the company in the same year. As the youngest member of the team, Wang Yang participated in the design of the arc welding function package, welding process, selection of welding machine and torch, and development and testing of other functions of the robot.

Wang Yang turned over a notebook, on which were densely recorded the process of trial and error. "When I was busy, I didn't pay much attention to the time. Especially in the critical period when the welding robot was about to be launched into the market, I often worked overtime until 10 p.m. or even early in the morning to repeatedly test to ensure that it met the listing standards." At the end of 2015, Zhejiang Qianjiang Robot successfully launched the first batch of welding robots to the market.

As the "strongest brain" of welding robot, Wang Yang is now mainly responsible for the end application and after-sales service. "R&D is a work from 0 to 1. According to the different needs of customers, such as product characteristics, customization functions, etc., we need to build application scenarios on the '1' scenario to design the best welding process parameters and solutions." Facing the expanded customer base and repeated product needs, Wang Yang plans to focus on developing functions and solutions with high demand and high reusability, Effectively meet the common needs of customers.

"The technology iteration is too fast now, and we need to constantly learn to adapt every day." In his spare time, Wang Yang still insists on taking the lead in tackling difficulties, understanding robot control systems at home and abroad, reading professional literature, and constantly improving his technical level and broadening his vision.

Master and apprentice jointly inherit technology

Wang Yang is well aware of the demand for welding skilled talents in the domestic market. Besides completing his own job, he will also take apprenticeship training. "What we ask and what the master teaches, the master is unreserved," said Chen Shaobo, Wang Yang's first apprentice.

Once, in a forklift manufacturing factory in Hangzhou, the robot responsible for chassis welding encountered technical difficulties, which led to unstable welding quality. Wang Yang and Chen Shaobo arrived at the scene together and made a comprehensive observation of the current working state of the welding robot. During the test for more than ten hours, Chen Shaobo followed closely and carefully observed Wang Yang's every inspection action. On the way back, Wang Yang will also review problems with him so that he can properly solve similar problems in the future.

Now, Wang Yang is leading a group of young people with basic or non welding majors to enter the robot industry. Wang Yang believes that it is the key to train outstanding talents in the welding field in the future to let the apprentices fully master the traditional welding technology and use digital thinking for innovative application on this basis.
