"Dream Building, Modernization, Jointly Drawing a New Vision, the Song of Laborers"

Xinhua News Agency, Hangzhou, April 27. Topic: Wang Yang: "Transformation" from Welder to Robot Programmer

The hand-held control panel sets parameters to program the welding robot so that it can weld the workpiece once according to the established trajectory... This is the daily work of robot programmer Wang Yang today. Recall that when he first started work, he was just an ordinary welding technician.

In 2010, Wang Yang joined Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle Co., Ltd., and the company immediately gave him an important task - to complete the welding process design of the pure aluminum frame of an imported racing car. At that time, the technology of Qianjiang Motorcycle was almost non-existent, and Wang Yang began to explore from scratch.

"Welding is not only to connect two plates, but also to design appropriate welding processes for materials." Wang Yang said that at that time, he soaked in the studio every day to test parameters, and the "error correction book" was densely recording the data of each test. "If this parameter doesn't work, you can write them down, and you can't make mistakes again next time."

The racing speed is very fast. If the process design is defective, it is easy to lead to cracks or stress points in the welding part, and the product is unqualified. Wang Yang said, "The pass line for welding is 100 points".

After more than 300 days and nights, Wang Yang finally independently developed and completed the welding of the "1130/450" large displacement aluminum alloy frame of Qianjiang Motorcycle, which promoted the mass production of these two frames.

In 2012, Wang Yang participated in the development, design and production of the manual argon arc welding process for titanium alloys above 40mm of Jiaolong. This is both an opportunity and a challenge for Wang Yang. The thickness of the sample is 54-90mm, and the welding process takes five or six hours, or even longer. "If shaking causes welding defects, stress concentration will occur," said Wang Yang.

This project made Wang Yang face up to his basic skills again. In order to practice stability, Wang Yang used the rest time to wrap one end of the rope around his wrist and hang an iron block on the other end. Through training, he drew a straight line to keep his strength stable. At first, he could only hold on for half an hour. Half a year later, the time had reached more than 6 hours.

After nearly two years, from process design to sample welding molding, Wang Yang has mastered a variety of welding methods, such as argon arc welding, gas shielded welding, laser welding and brazing, and a qualified engineer has become a talent through "quenching".

Wang Yang has worked for more than ten years during the period of rapid development of industrial robots. Welding robots began to gradually replace manpower. Wang Yang also changed from a technician to a programmer, becoming the technical backbone of Zhejiang Qianjiang Robot Co., Ltd.

Wang Yang was also embarrassed when he recalled that he had just started programming, but his tenacity of "not afraid of hardship, not afraid of difficulty" supported him to move forward. He bought many programming books and tried to design programming code.

After continuous exploration, testing and debugging, Wang Yang can debug the welding robot with the best welding process parameters and scheme according to the different needs of the enterprise. In 2019, Wang Yang participated in the research and development of an industrial die casting robot, which was recognized as the first equipment in Zhejiang Province.

It is hard to learn welding, and the test process is boring. The high temperature of welding will also cause burns to the skin. "Nowadays, few young people are willing to study hard." Wang Yang said frankly that as long as anyone is willing to learn, he will give everything he can.

"The master taught me welding skills hand in hand without reservation." Chen Shaobo, who has become a "Taizhou craftsman", is Wang Yang's first apprentice, and Wang Yang has always been his model in his mind.

Over the past 14 years, Wang Yang has taken welding as a career, focusing on "choosing one thing and ending one's life", and keeping improving "doing one line and drilling one line", and working hard based on his own post. So far, he has published 11 related papers, and obtained 40 utility model patents and 4 software patents.

From welding technologist to robot programmer, Wang Yang once felt that "welding all kinds of materials in the world into a finished product" was a sense of achievement. Now, it is another sense of achievement to see one robot can complete high standard welding work after his "training".
