At the beginning of the light, Wu Qingbao, a community waste classification volunteer who was nearly 70 years old, put the cardboard boxes into the recyclables of the smart garbage room after scanning the two-dimensional code with his mobile phone at the domestic waste drop point of Ruihong New Town Phase II Community, Jiaxing Road Street, Hongkou District, Shanghai.
"Now I don't have to 'stand guard' next to the garbage can. Residents can voluntarily sort out the garbage and the corridor is much cleaner," Wu Qingbao said.
Just a year ago, a special reply inspired volunteers like Wu Qingbao in garbage sorting.
The letter was signed by Xi Jinping.
"I remember five years ago when I communicated with you about garbage classification, you were enthusiastic public welfare I was impressed by the strength of serving the masses. " General Secretary Xi Jinping said in his reply.
"Waste classification and resource utilization is a systematic project, which requires the concerted efforts of all parties, accurate policy implementation, and long-term success. It requires the active participation and initiative of urban and rural residents." While affirming the achievements of waste classification, General Secretary Xi Jinping raised ardent expectations.
From November 6 to 7, 2018, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the People's Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited Shanghai. On the morning of the 6th, Xi Jinping had a cordial conversation with several young people who were sharing the practice of promoting garbage classification in the community at the first branch of Jiaxing Road Street, a public post station in Hongkou District. On November 6, 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping, who was visiting Shanghai, came to the first sub station of Jiaxing Road Street, Hongkou District Citizen Post Station. In the party building workstation, several young people from neighborhood committees and enterprises are exchanging the practice of garbage classification and promotion in the community. A young man told the General Secretary that participating in public welfare activities is a new fashion for young people.
"Garbage classification is a new fashion!" General Secretary Xi Jinping said that comprehensive garbage treatment needs the participation of all people. I am concerned about this matter and hope that Shanghai will do a good job of it.
Eight months later, on July 1, 2019, the Shanghai Municipal Domestic Waste Management Regulations will come into force.
In 2023, the domestic waste in Shanghai will have been treated innocuously, and more and more citizens will consciously classify the waste. The volunteers wrote and reported their hard won achievements to the General Secretary, expressing their determination to contribute to promoting garbage classification to blossom and bear fruit in a wider range.
Today, inspired and encouraged by the reply of the General Secretary, residents' "renewable" benches for rest, plant fertilizers in community gardens, and smart recycling points exchange... Environmental protection creativity in Shanghai's residential areas has sprung up like mushrooms.

From the original "throwing into a basket" to the present "subdividing into four buckets", from the past "source reduction" to the present "turning waste into treasure", with the deepening of waste classification, the efforts of volunteers like Wu Qingbao are being echoed nationwide.
