Biodiversity is the foundation of human well-being, earth health and economic prosperity, and the cornerstone of natural ecology. On May 22, Suzhou Ecological Environment Bureau organized a press conference to release the results of the background survey of biodiversity in Suzhou for the first time.

Suzhou has fully completed the background survey of biodiversity at the county level. There are 4353 species recorded in Suzhou, which is at the upstream level of the province, including 1578 terrestrial vascular plants, 355 terrestrial vertebrates, 1135 terrestrial insects and 1285 aquatic organisms. There are 120 rare and endangered species included in the Red List of Biodiversity in China, and 8 species are listed as critically endangered (CR); 98 species of national key protected wild animals and plants were recorded, 63 species of animals were included in the List of National Key Protected Wild Animals, and 16 species of alien invasive species were included in the List of Key Managed Alien Invasive Species.

The relevant person in charge of the Municipal Bureau of Ecological Environment introduced the situation of the city's biodiversity conservation in recent years, and released the results of the city's biodiversity survey. It is reported that in recent years, Suzhou has continuously strengthened biodiversity conservation, explored innovative conservation approaches and methods, and gradually developed a new way of biodiversity conservation with Suzhou characteristics. In October 2022, the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal People's Government issued the Implementation Plan on Further Strengthening Biodiversity Protection, which requires the city to strengthen biodiversity protection and promote the overall improvement of ecological environment quality. With the continuous progress of biodiversity conservation, Suzhou has basically built a biodiversity conservation monitoring system. At present, the city has built a number of biodiversity observation stations, including Zhangjiagang Bay, Changshu South Lake, Changshu Shang Lake, Taicang Jincang Lake, Baimaokou of the Yangtze River, Xiangcheng Huqiu Wetland Park (Phase I), and is building Kunshan Tianfu Wetland, Wuzhong Xishan Island Xiangcheng Huqiu Wetland Park (Phase II) and Gusu Huqiu Wetland Park and other observation stations. With the goal of biodiversity conservation, we accelerated the construction of Wuzhong Xishan "ecological island" pilot area, and scheduled seven key projects, including the protection project of native berries and characteristic germplasm resources, the protection project of fish and birds and the construction project of habitat, and the construction project of ecological corridor around Taihu Lake, which were listed as the first batch of "ecological island" pilot area demonstration projects by the Provincial Department of Ecological Environment.

The flower wearing butterfly is deeply seen, and the dragonfly flies slowly. The beautiful pictures in ancient poems can be seen everywhere in Suzhou today. The background survey data of biodiversity in Suzhou shows that Wuzhong District, Changshu City, High tech Zone, Zhangjiagang City and Taicang City are rich in butterfly resources. From the perspective of landform, Taihu Lake basin, riverside area, Yangcheng Lake area and other areas are rich in diversity. The overall distribution characteristics are that the north and south are larger than the middle, and the west is larger than the east.

The regions with rich terrestrial vascular plant diversity in Suzhou are Zhangjiagang City, Suzhou Industrial Park, Changshu City and Suzhou High tech Zone, namely the riverside area, Dayang Mountain, Shangfang Mountain and Yangcheng Lake area. The diversity of terrestrial vertebrates in Suzhou is relatively high as a whole, especially in Changshu City, Wujiang District, Suzhou High tech Zone, etc., which is manifested in the landform along the river, along the Grand Canal, Yangcheng Lake area, Dayang Mountain, Shangfang Mountain, etc. Thanks to the advantages of ecological environment and natural conditions, Suzhou High tech Zone, Kunshan City and Wujiang District have a high abundance of terrestrial insects. Similar to the distribution characteristics of terrestrial vertebrates, Dayang Mountain, Shangfang Mountain, Yangcheng Lake, and the Grand Canal are areas where terrestrial insects are concentrated. The aquatic biodiversity of Gusu District, Kunshan City, Suzhou High tech Zone, Xiangcheng District and the Park is relatively high, which is manifested in the landform along the Grand Canal and Yangcheng Lake. In Gusu District, the species of phytoplankton and zooplankton are absolutely dominant, and the number of aquatic species ranks first in all districts (cities); Suzhou High tech Zone, Xiangcheng District and the park are also in the forefront with their rich phytoplankton and zooplankton; Kunshan City ranks second with its rich and diverse benthos. "According to the survey in relevant fields and expert opinions, the key areas of biodiversity conservation in Suzhou are generally distributed as' two belts and four districts'. 'two belts' refer to the species conservation belt along the Yangtze River Basin and the Grand Canal; The "four zones" refer to the hilly and mountainous biological protection zone along Taihu Lake, the key aquatic biological protection zone of Taihu Lake, the species protection zone around Yangcheng Lake and the ancient and famous trees protection zone in Jiangnan gardens. " The relevant person in charge of the municipal ecological environment bureau said.

At present, Suzhou is assessing the current situation of biodiversity, connecting the national and provincial biodiversity conservation strategic action plans, preparing specific action plans for biodiversity conservation, and striving to provide scientific guidance for comprehensively improving the level of biodiversity governance.
