The history of Yichun can be traced back to the Zhou Dynasty. From the Zhou Dynasty to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, there were Sushen, Fuyu, Doumolou and other ethnic groups living here. In the Sui and Tang dynasties, Yichun was inhabited by Heishui Mohe, and the Tang Dynasty set up Heishui Dudu Mansion here for Jimi rule, so the Central Plains Dynasty began to manage this land.

In the Liao Dynasty, Yichun was under the jurisdiction of King Tieli's residence in Tokyo; The Jin Dynasty was under the jurisdiction of Puhe Road, Huining Mansion, Shangjing; Yuan belonged to Shuidada Road of Liaoyang Xingsheng; In the Ming Dynasty, it was the jurisdiction of Nuergandushi Tunhewei. In the Qing Dynasty, Yichun area was successively under the jurisdiction of Ningguta General and Heilongjiang General.

From the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China, Yichun belonged to Tangyuan County, Heilongjiang Province. After the Northeast was occupied by the Japanese invaders, the Japanese invaders began to plunder and slash here. In August 1945, the Soviet Red Army defeated the Japanese army in the Northeast, and Yichun recovered.

In 1946, the Chinese People's Liberation Army liberated Yichun. At the same time, it carried out land reform, bandit suppression, mass production, support for the front and other work, making contributions to the victory of the national liberation war and domestic economic construction. In 1950, Yichun Forest Industry Management Bureau was established. In order to meet the needs of forest industry production and development, Yichun Forest District, formerly belonging to Tangyuan County, was zoned out and Yichun County was established separately.

In February 1958, Yichun was officially removed from the county and set up as a city, belonging to the Songhua River Special District. In June 1964, Yichun City was changed into Yichun Special Zone, and the system of "government enterprise integration" was implemented on a trial basis. The forestry work was led by the Ministry of Forestry, and the local work was led by Heilongjiang Province. There was basically one forestry bureau in each of the 15 districts of the city. This unique system of "government enterprise integration" has always been followed.

In May 1967, Yichun Special Zone was cancelled and re established as a prefecture level city. On April 1, 1970, Yichun District was added. Jiayin County under the jurisdiction of Heihe District and Tieli County under the jurisdiction of Suihua District were under the jurisdiction of Yichun District.

In December 1979, Yichun City was merged into prefectures, and Jiayin County and Tieli County were directly under the jurisdiction of Yichun City. In September 1988, Tieli County under the jurisdiction of Yichun City became Tieli City (county level), which was entrusted by Yichun City. So far, Yichun has jurisdiction over 15 districts, led 1 county, and managed 1 county-level city. This administrative system has been followed up to now.
