Qianxinan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is located at the junction of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces (regions), at the southeast end of Yunnan Guizhou Plateau. It spans 104 ° 35 ′ - 106 ° 32 ′ east longitude, 24 ° 38 ′ - 26 ° 11 ′ north latitude, 210 kilometers long from east to west, and 177 kilometers wide from south to north. It borders Luodian County of Qiannan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in the east, Longlin County, Tianlin County and Leye County of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region across the river in the south, Fuyuan County and Luoping County of Yunnan Province and Panxian County of Liupanshui City of Guizhou Province in the west.

On May 1, 1982, the People's Government of Qianxinan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was officially established, and the prefecture government was located in Xingyi City. There are 1 city and 7 counties under the jurisdiction of the prefecture, including Jixingyi City, Xingren County, Anlong County, Zhenfeng County, Pu'an County, Qinglong County, Ceheng County and Wangmo County.
