Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, co founded by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, the Beijing Municipal People's Government and China National Railway Group Co., Ltd. It is also a national "211 Project", "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" and "double first-class" construction university.

Beijing Jiaotong University, as one of the three sources of Jiaotong University, has a history dating back to 1896. Its predecessor was the railway management school founded by the Qing government. It is the first university in China that specializes in training management talents, and the birthplace of modern railway management and telecommunications education in China. In 1917, it was reorganized into the Railway Management School and the School of Posts and Telecommunications. In 1921, it merged with Shanghai Industrial School and Tangshan Industrial School to form Jiaotong University. After the reorganization of Jiaotong University in 1923, the university was renamed Beijing Jiaotong University. In 1950, the school was named North Jiaotong University. Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school, and Mao Yi, a famous bridge expert, was promoted to president. In 1952, the school was renamed Beijing Railway Institute. In 1970, the name of "Northern Jiaotong University" was restored. In 2000, it was merged with Beijing Electric Power College and transferred from the Ministry of Railways to the Ministry of Education. In 2003, the name of "Beijing Jiaotong University" was restored. The school has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents famous at home and abroad, such as Liu Han, the founder of China's first radio station, Jin Shixuan, the author of China's first railway transport monograph, Xu Jing, the pioneer of China's railway transport economics, Yang Rumei, one of China's first four major accountants, and Zheng Zhenduo, a modern Chinese writer, literary critic, and literary historian.
