In 1971, the People's Republic of China resumed its lawful seat in the United Nations and played a more active role in international affairs. After the reform and opening up, China has gradually participated in United Nations peacekeeping affairs. Since taking part in United Nations peacekeeping operations in 1990, the Chinese military has always kept in mind the original intention and mission of fulfilling the responsibility of being a major country, maintaining world peace, and serving to build a community with a shared future for mankind. It has bravely marched for world peace and forged ahead. China's "blue helmet" has become a key force for the United Nations to maintain peace.

The participation of the Chinese army in United Nations peacekeeping operations stems from the Chinese nation's peace gene, the Chinese people's feelings for the world, the fundamental purpose of the people's army, and China's responsibility as a great power! The Chinese army conscientiously practices the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, makes positive contributions to maintaining world peace and promoting common development, and highlights the image of a teacher of peace, justice and civilization.

In April 1990, the Chinese army sent five military observers to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, which started the process of participating in United Nations peacekeeping operations. Over the past 30 years, the Chinese military has participated in 25 United Nations peacekeeping operations, sending nearly 50000 peacekeeping military professionals such as engineering, medical, transportation, security, infantry, helicopters and other types of units, as well as military observers, staff officers, and contract officers.

For more than 30 years, Chinese peacekeepers have traveled to more than 20 countries and regions, including Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Sudan, Lebanon, Cyprus, South Sudan, Mali, Abyei, and have made important contributions to promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes, maintaining regional security and stability, and promoting the economic and social development of host countries. 16 Chinese peacekeepers gave their precious lives.

On September 28, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the United Nations Peacekeeping Summit and announced six commitments to support United Nations peacekeeping operations. The Chinese army resolutely implements President Xi Jinping's decision and deployment, and is committed to its word and action, fulfilling relevant commitments with practical actions, and achieving a series of important results.
