There are 124 courts in Jiangsu court system, including 1 high court, 13 intermediate courts, 108 basic courts and 2 special courts. In addition, with the approval of the Supreme People's Court, an intellectual property court, an environmental resources court and a bankruptcy court are set up in Nanjing, and an intellectual property court, an international commercial court, a labor court and a bankruptcy court are set up in Suzhou; Set up intellectual property courts in Wuxi and Xuzhou. The two special courts are Nanjing Maritime Court and Xuzhou Railway Transport Court. Among them, the Nanjing Maritime Court is organized as an intermediate court, and there are four dispatched courts (Suzhou, Nantong, Taizhou and Lianyungang courts respectively); Xuzhou Railway Transport Court is established according to the basic court system. There are more than 19000 court staff in the province, including more than 7000 post judges and more than 9000 engaged clerks.

As of December 2023, Jiangsu Higher People's Court has 584 staff members, 203 post judges (including 125 male judges and 78 female judges), and 127 engaged clerks. Main functions and powers of Jiangsu Higher People's Court:

(1) To try cases of first instance, such as criminal, civil and administrative cases, which are under the jurisdiction of the Higher People's Court according to law and which the Higher People's Court believes should be tried by itself.

(2) Try cases of second instance, such as criminal, civil and administrative cases, which are under the jurisdiction of the higher people's courts according to law.

(3) Examine death penalty cases and review death suspension cases in accordance with legal provisions.

(4) To accept all kinds of appeals and retrial applications that do not accept the effective judgment of the people's courts at all levels in the province in accordance with the law, and to bring up for trial or order the people's court at a lower level to retrial if there is any definite error; Try all kinds of cases ordered to be retried by the Supreme People's Court.

(5) To try cases of protest brought by the People's Procuratorate in accordance with the procedure of trial supervision according to law.

(6) Exercise designated jurisdiction over the people's courts at lower levels according to law.

(7) Try cases of commutation and parole of life imprisonment and death suspension, and guide lower courts in commutation and parole work.

(8) To supervise the judicial work of the people's courts at lower levels according to law.

(9) Exercise judicial execution power and judicial decision power according to law.

(10) State compensation shall be determined according to law.

(11) Uniformly manage and coordinate the implementation work of people's courts at all levels throughout the province.

(12) Organize and guide people's courts at lower levels to handle matters of judicial assistance, and carry out judicial exchanges with foreign judicial circles and international organizations.

(13) Put forward opinions on the draft of local regulations and rules; Put forward judicial suggestions for the problems found in the trial of the case.

(14) To carry out ideological and political education and organize professional training for judges and other staff of the Provincial Higher People's Court; To guide the ideological and political work, education and training of the people's courts at lower levels; Managing judges and other staff in accordance with their authority; Assist the provincial competent department in managing the organization and staffing of people's courts at all levels in the province.

(15) To lead the supervision work of people's courts at all levels throughout the province.
