On August 23, the Ministry of Natural Resources introduced at a regular press conference that it has gradually increased the supervision of "problem maps" this year, and has investigated and handled maps released by television, websites, newspapers, shops, new media and other carriers that do not comply with China's regulations and do not correctly express China's territorial claims according to law and regulations.

As one of the important ways for human beings to know their own homes, maps are not only a collection of geographical coordinates and a tool for daily use, but also the most intuitive form of national territory. A correct national territory is a symbol of national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Therefore, in addition to its rigorous scientific nature, maps also have a serious political nature and strict legal nature.

"Problem maps" occasionally appear. There are two recent examples: on August 11, the Hongqilafu Customs under Urumqi Customs seized three notebooks printed with "problem maps" at the entry tourist inspection channel; On August 15, Zhangjiajie Customs under Changsha Customs seized three publications containing "problem maps" in the inbound travel inspection channel. According to the identification of relevant institutions, the two batches of "problem maps" have problems such as missing drawing and wrong marking, which is detrimental to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and violates the one China principle.

The map quality is closely related to the sovereignty, security and interests of a country. If you miss a single point, you will often miss a thousand miles. Whether "intentionally" or "unintentionally", the emergence of "problem map" is a damage to national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also a damage to public patriotic feelings, which is more likely to distort cognition and harm the four sides.

To put an end to "problem maps", first of all, we need to strengthen the responsibility of map compilation and publication. Article 15 of the Regulations on the Administration of Maps clearly stipulates that maps disclosed to the public shall be submitted to the competent administrative department of surveying, mapping and geographic information with the power of examination and verification for examination and verification. There is a complete management mechanism for map preparation and review in China. In reality, many "problem maps" appear because of the failure to strictly comply with relevant regulations, which is also the key point for relevant departments to strengthen supervision and investigate and deal with this in accordance with laws and regulations - standardize the use of maps.

To maintain a "zero tolerance" attitude towards the "problem map", we need not only to strengthen supervision, but also to build a national defense line. According to the Regulations on Map Management, any unit or individual has the right to report illegal map acts. Everyone has the right and obligation to understand the territory of the country, establish a sense of national territory, enhance the consciousness of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and actively say "no" to the "problem map".
