Johnson Matthey, the global leader in sustainable technology, was selected by HIF Global, the world's leading electronic fuels company, to become the methanol licensor of HIF Global's Paysand ú eFuels project in Uruguay. The facility will become the largest electronic methanol plant in South America, and will use the electrolytic hydrogen (green) and waste carbon dioxide of the plant to produce electronic methanol. Electronic methanol can produce fuel with lower carbon than traditional methanol by using renewable raw materials.
J Electronic methanol eMERALD of M ™ The technology has been proved to be a reliable way to produce decarbonized methanol. The technology will be deployed in HIF Paysand ú eFuels facilities, with an estimated annual capacity of 700000 tons of electronic methanol. These methanol will be used to support the rapidly growing demand of the marine market, as well as the raw materials for the production of electronic gasoline (through the methanol to gasoline process), which will promote the decarbonization of more than 150000 vehicles.
This cooperation is based on the successful demonstration of eMERALD technology in HIF Haru Oni eFuels factory, where JM obtained technology license and provided catalyst. The demonstration plant has been running successfully for more than 12 months, and the methanol produced can be further processed into gasoline.
In addition, HIF Global has announced other eFuels projects planned in the United States, Tasmania and Chile. JM has worked with HIF Global to support the development of these projects.
HIF Global will invest US $4 billion in this facility, making it the most important investment in Uruguay's history. The plant is planned to be completed in 2025, and is expected to create about 1500 jobs and 300 permanent operating jobs during the construction period.

Alberto Giovanzana, general manager of CT Licensing at Johnson World Wide, said: "The sustainable methanol fuel market is growing rapidly, providing important solutions for decarbonization in shipping, road transportation and other industries. As a leading global supplier of methanol synthesis technology and catalysts, JM has rich experience in the methanol industry. We look forward to continuing to cooperate with HIF to provide our electronic methanol technology for this exciting project. "
Victor Turpaud, CEO of HIF Latam, said, "eFuels is a substitute for fossil fuels and a necessary solution for global transportation decarbonization. We have demonstrated the ability of using Johnson Matthey's technology to produce green hydrogen and recyclable carbon dioxide in the Haru Oni eFuels factory in southern Chile. Expanding our cooperation with Johnson Matthey represents the importance of a long-term partnership for HIF and achieving our common goals. "
