PCTG

PCTG is a transparent plastic and an amorphous copolyester. The common comonomer of PCTG is 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), which is called polyethylene terephthalate-1, 4-cyclohexanedimethanol ester in full. It is the product of transesterification polycondensation of terephthalic acid (TPA), ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM). Compared with PET, it has more 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol comonomer and more ethylene glycol comonomer than PCT. Therefore, the performance of PCTG is very different from PET and PCT. PCTG is an amorphous copolyester. With the increase of CHDM in the copolymer, the melting point decreases, the glass transition temperature increases, and the crystallinity decreases, finally forming an amorphous polymer. Generally, the content of CHDM in PCTG is 30% - 40%.

1. PCTG classification

It is widely used in indoor and outdoor signs, storage racks, vending machine panels, furniture Building and mechanical baffle, etc. PCTG card is mainly used in Europe, but it is also increasingly used in North America and Asia. The reason is that it has a wide processing range, high mechanical strength and excellent flexibility. Compared with PVC, it has high transparency, good gloss, easy printing and environmental advantages. PCTG materials shall be used for credit cards. Visa is one of the largest credit card companies in the world, with 580 million cards issued worldwide in 1998. The company has approved glycol modified polyester (PCTG) as its credit card material. For countries that require card materials to be more environmentally friendly, PETG can replace PVC materials. It has the advantages of high suction force, high transparency, high gloss, low haze, easy printing, not easy to fall off, and low natural shrinkage rate during storage. It is used for beverage bottles, food and chemicals; Shrink packaging of Lingpin and shrink labels of electronic products. Where biaxially stretched. PETG film is suitable for high-grade packaging, printing, electronic appliances, cable binding, insulation materials and high-quality substrates in various industrial fields. Uniaxially stretched PET and heat shrinkable film are suitable for external labels of various cans, polyester bottles, containers, etc. Compared with PVC shrink film, PETG shrink film also has the advantages of environmental protection. Bottle use: to improve the low toughness of traditional polyester beverage bottles, especially suitable for manufacturing large capacity thick wall transparent containers, which are highly transparent, not easy to break, and easy to be surface modified, meeting the FDA food contact standards, and can be used in food and medical products and other fields. In terms of beer plastic packaging, Eastman's new environment-friendly plastic beer bottles produced for Asahi are made of Eastal copolyester film as the sealing packaging material. They are silver black in appearance, and are supplemented with black hole belt pull ring type covers at the neck, which can block light, isolate air, ensure beer quality, and have the explosion-proof function of preventing fragments from splashing when the bottle body breaks, with superior shrinkage performance. (3) Cosmetic packaging PCTG has glass like transparency and density close to that of glass, good gloss, chemical corrosion resistance, impact resistance, and easy processing. It can be used for injection molding, injection stretch blow molding, and extrusion blow molding. It can also produce unique shapes, appearances and special effects, such as bright colors, frosting, marble texture, metallic luster, etc. In addition, other polyester, elastic plastic or ABS can also be used for overlapping injection molding. The products include perfume bottles and bottle caps, cosmetics bottles and bottle caps, lipstick tubes, cosmetic boxes, deodorant packaging, talcum powder bottles and eyeliner caps. PETG injection molding products include medical devices such as filters, eustachian tubes, pipe connectors, pumps, clips and dialysis equipment. Household utensils such as cups, salad bowls, salt jars, pepper jars, etc., have excellent transparency, gloss, good toughness, processability, and excellent colourability.

3. Development history of PCTG

From the current market situation, many people may have never been exposed to PETG. In fact, PETG really started from transparent plastic packaging materials for high-end cosmetics. Previously, transparent plastic packaging materials for high-end cosmetics usually used acrylic. Although the transparency of acrylic is excellent, However, its solvent resistance is poor (acrylic is easy to whiten due to contact with cosmetic contents, which requires frequent addition of liners), and acrylic is not resistant to impact. However, The emergence of PETG/PCTG can just make up for this defect of acrylic, because PETG/PCTG has many advantages, such as the most extensive chemical resistance, high transparency, high toughness, self-adhesive, good printability (its products do not need corona treatment), high impact resistance, good weather resistance, chemical resistance and corrosion resistance, good gas barrier, environmental protection and non-toxic, good processing and forming, good ductility With the characteristics of internal stress resistance, they have gradually become the first choice of transparent plastic packaging materials (such as containers and cream bottles for high-end cosmetics) for the world's major brand cosmetics manufacturers. Especially in terms of chemical resistance, PETG/PCTG has more extensive chemical resistance than acrylic. PETG/PCTG can be said to be one of the transparent plastics with the most extensive chemical resistance, so that in many cosmetic packaging occasions, PETG containers no longer need to add liners, and can directly contact the contents of cosmetics. In contrast, transparent containers made of acrylic, AS, PS, PC, NAS and other materials usually need to add liners, and when these materials are often exposed to the above chemicals, their fatigue strength will become worse, which is more likely to lead to stress whitening or stress cracking of transparent containers, and sometimes even lead to unnecessary claims from customers. In addition, adding liners also requires a lot of work, It indirectly increases a lot of costs, so if you want to calculate the overall comprehensive cost, PETG/PCTG transparent containers without liners will undoubtedly be much more cost-effective than plastic containers such as acrylic containers with liners. Also, without liners, the original color of cosmetics content will be well displayed in front of customers, which can better enhance the competitiveness of cosmetics in the market.
