The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of Beijing Jiaotong University. Many outstanding economists, such as Ma Yinchu, Zhao Chuanyun, Su Jingzhi, Xu Qingbin, Fang Ju, Chen Jingyan, Song Shuxun and Yao Peiji, have taught here. The century old Jiaotong University has been handed down from generation to generation. The discipline of transportation economics in New China started and grew here, forming a national key discipline of industrial economics with transportation economics as its characteristics. At present, there are 43 teachers in the Department of Economics, including 13 professors and one national famous teacher. They have undertaken the National Social Science Fund, the National Natural Science Fund and a large number of provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. The expert suggestions or internal participation written by Rong Chaohe, Zhao Jian, Ouguo, Feng Hua, Li Menggang, etc. have received the attention and instructions of national leaders and governments, Relevant teachers have published papers in top journals such as Transportation Research at home and abroad, delivered keynote speeches at important international and domestic conferences, and published academic opinions and received special interviews in domestic and foreign media such as CCTV. They have extensive academic and social influence at home and abroad.

For a long time, the teachers of the Department of Economics have attached equal importance to teaching and scientific research, taking cultivating talents, inheriting culture, and leading economic and social development as their own responsibilities. In terms of transportation economy, space-time economy, science and technology service industry and emerging industries, industrial organization and industrial security, international trade, economic statistics and quantitative economy, technological economy and innovation economy, regional economy and urban economy Energy, economy, environment and economy have formed a stable research direction. The Department of Economics has set up the Institute of Transport Economic Theory and Policy, the Institute of Service Economy and Emerging Industries, the China Transport Economy Research Center, the China Technical Economy Research Center, and the China Urbanization Research Center, and has undertaken the construction of two Beijing research platforms - "Beijing Transport Development Research Base" and "Beijing Industrial Security and Industrial Development Research Base", It has jointly established an economics teaching practice base with the China Communications and Transportation Association, and annually holds the "Transport and Space Time Economy Forum", "Industrial Security and Industrial Development Forum", and "Innovation Industry Forum", among which the research directions of transport and space time economy, science and technology service industry, and emerging industries are at the leading level in China.

The Department of Economics has a bachelor's degree in economics, which is one of the first national characteristic majors. Relying on the national key disciplines of industrial economics, it cultivates high-quality economic professionals with the basis of science and engineering and the characteristics of transportation economy, and provides a large number of talents for various enterprises in China, such as transportation authorities, transportation research institutions, industrial management and research departments, and central enterprises, It enjoys a high reputation in society. The pilot college has strengthened the integration of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies and the integration of science and education, and carried out the exploration of undergraduate tutorial system and academy style training mode. Since 2013, the proportion of undergraduate economics majors studying at home and abroad has reached more than 80%. The Department of Economics enrolls academic master's students and master's students of applied statistics in industrial economics, international trade, economic statistics, technical economy and management, etc. It also enrolls industrial organization, industrial structure and industrial security, transport economic theory and policy, regional, urban and resource environment research under the first level discipline of applied economics, PhD candidate in quantitative economy and technological economy.
