Location of administrative district
Putian City is located in the central coastal area of Fujian Province, between 118 ° 27 '~119 ° 39' east longitude and 24 ° 59 '~25 ° 46' north latitude. It is 122.4 kilometers long from east to west and 80.5 kilometers wide from south to north. It borders Fuqing City, Fuzhou City in the northeast, Yongtai County, Fuzhou City in the northwest in the north, Dehua County, Yongchun County, Nan'an City, Quangang District, Hui'an County, Quanzhou City in the southwest in the west, Taiwan Strait in the southeast, and Taiwan Province across the sea.

On September 9, 1983, the State Council approved the establishment of a prefecture level Putian City. After several adjustments of districts, counties, townships, towns and streets, Putian now governs one county and four districts, namely Xianyou County, Licheng District, Chengxiang District, Hanjiang District, Xiuyu District (including the management committee of Meizhou Island National Tourism Resort and the management committee of Meizhou Bay North Bank Economic Development Zone).
