In September 1959, an oil field was discovered in Datong Town, Zhaozhou County, named "Daqing Oil Field", and Daqing District was established with Datong Town as the center. In April 1960, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, in order to speed up the construction of Songliao oil base, decided to establish a prefecture level Anda City, under the jurisdiction of Daqing District. In 1964, Anda City was abolished and Anda County was restored; Daqing District has set up Anda (Daqing) Special Zone, which is still called "Anda City" for the sake of confidentiality. In December 1979, with the approval of the State Council, Anda Special Zone was renamed Daqing City. By the end of 2015, Daqing had five districts under its jurisdiction, namely Sartu, Longfeng, Ranghulu, Honggang and Datong, four counties, namely Zhaoyuan, Zhaozhou, Lindian and Durbert (Mongolian Autonomous County), and the municipal government was located in Sartu District.

Daqing City is located in the southwest of Heilongjiang Province and the hinterland of Songnen Plain, spanning 123 ° 45 ′ - 125 ° 47 ′ E and 45 ° 23 ′ - 47 ° 29 ′ N, with a length of 138 kilometers from north to south and a maximum width of 73 kilometers from east to west.

Daqing is connected to Suihua in the east; In the south and southwest, it faces Songyuan City and Baicheng City of Jilin Province across the river; It is adjacent to Qiqihar in the northwest and north.
