At the reinforcement processing site of Lot 1 of Lan Yong Lin Expressway, Ma Xiaoli is squatting in front of a row of steel frames to solve the technical problems encountered on the site with his colleagues.

Ma Xiaoli is the monitor of the steel structure team of the Third Engineering Company of China Railway 21st Bureau. With only junior high school education, he has become an expert on the construction site. He developed a variety of mechanical equipment, which not only improved work efficiency, but also reduced labor intensity. For his outstanding contributions to his work, he has successively won the National May Day Labor Medal, the "Most Beautiful Railway Man" and other honorary titles. The company also set up "Ma Xiaoli Model Worker Innovation Studio", attracting more than 60 professional and technical talents to engage in research and development.

Study hard and work hard as a model

In 1971, Ma Xiaoli was born into a peasant family in Fuping County, Shaanxi Province. After graduating from junior high school, in order to reduce the burden of his family, he learned electric welding and mechanical repair at a local agricultural machinery station. At the age of 18, he began to work in many places. "When I saw those management and technical personnel at the construction site, I was very envious of them." Ma Xiaoli recalled that he was secretly determined to learn skills and live by their skills without education.

At the beginning of 2006, Ma Xiaoli came to work in the reinforcement processing class of Duwen Expressway Project Department of the Third Engineering Company of China Railway 21st Bureau. With his own hard research, he stood out in China Railway 21st Bureau, which is full of talents, and became a technical expert.

Longxi Tunnel is a key and difficult control project of Duwen Expressway Project, with a total length of more than 7300 meters. It is a high gas tunnel. "At that time, there was an urgent need to process an excavation trolley in the tunnel face, but no spark could be seen in the high gas tunnel, and it was impossible to weld; if it was made outside the tunnel, there would be a lining trolley in the tunnel, which could not pass." This was Ma Xiaoli's first problem after he arrived at China Railway 21st Bureau. Combining his own expertise and experience in electric welding, he designed and processed the channel steel, angle steel and I-beam required by the trolley into parts that can be connected with more than 300 bolts, and then sent the processed parts to the working face for assembly, which is safe and convenient.

Since then, Ma Xiaoli has successively developed construction equipment such as shotcrete and anchor concrete batching machine, H-shaped steel bending machine, multi-functional lifting equipment, which has greatly reduced the labor intensity of operators and improved production efficiency and project quality while speeding up the construction progress.

In 2009, Ma Xiaoli, 38, won the National May Day Labor Medal. In January this year, Ma Xiaoli won the title of "the most beautiful railway man" jointly awarded by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and the State Railway Group. Later, Ma Xiaoli, as a member of the sixth "Most Beautiful Railwayman" advanced deeds report team, went to all parts of the country to carry out tour lectures.

Various honors came one after another. Ma Xiaoli said, "I'm just an ordinary employee of the enterprise. I'm glad to catch up with the good times and step by step to today."

Have the courage to innovate and solve difficult problems

"If the project lacks any equipment, I will build it; if the equipment is not easy to use, I will transform and optimize the equipment; if there is no ready-made equipment, I will draw, design and process by myself." The "little things" invented by Ma Xiaoli always play a role in critical moments.

During the construction of Lanzhou Chongqing Railway, the lowest temperature in winter reached minus 20 degrees Celsius. In order to overcome the impact of low temperature on the concrete mixing station, Ma Xiaoli invented "sand bin floor heating"; During the construction of Haoji Railway, it was difficult for construction vehicles to turn around in the tunnel, with heavy oil smoke and poor safety performance. He developed a turning device for construction vehicles in the tunnel; During the construction of Lanzhou Xinjiang Railway, the concrete must be covered and watered immediately 12 hours after pouring. He innovatively designed an automatic maintenance and dust removal system for tunnel lining concrete that integrates concrete maintenance and dust removal... For more than ten years, Ma Xiaoli has always been rooted in the construction line, and found problems and solutions in field practice.

"It is as difficult as a precise surgical operation to cut a completely consistent regular hole on the curved steel arch." Zhao Qiang, the technical director of Lot 1 Project Department of Lanzhou Yonglin Expressway of China Railway 21st Bureau, said that in previous construction, the quality and spacing of the reserved hole cutting were all based on the welder's personal intuition, but the experienced welder, Nor can it ensure that every shot can be absolutely accurate.

If you have problems, ask Ma Xiaoli. At the Third Engineering Company of China Railway 21st Bureau, everyone knows that Ma Xiaoli is good at solving problems. "Master Ma has brought a set of steel arch frame hole cutting device designed and invented by himself. It is simple to operate, and can cut holes automatically, with equal aperture and equal spacing, which can not only save costs, but also improve construction efficiency and quality." Zhao Qiang pointed to the cut holes, looking pleased.

There are still many problems waiting for him to solve on the construction site. Lot 1 of Lanzhou Yonglin Expressway is located in Xigu District, Lanzhou City, close to the village. In order to reduce the disturbance of tunnel blasting on the villagers, the project department decided to use a single arm roadheader. However, the mountain here is Grade V loess and Grade V sandy mudstone, which will produce more dust when using the single arm roadheader, affecting the health of workers. How to solve the problem of dust reduction in tunnel construction?

Ma Xiaoli came to Lot 1 of Lanyonglin Expressway and found that the tunnel construction dust was easy to disperse. If the fog gun machine was used, the dust would fly everywhere. After recording the problems and on-site data, Ma Xiaoli returned to the studio to find a solution. Before long, he arrived at the construction site with a solution: first, use the water curtain wall to reduce dust, then use the spiral dust removal system for secondary and tertiary dust reduction, collect the dust into the water tank, and finally use the mud drainage system to drain the mud out of the water tank.

"Such several sets of equipment together can not only ensure the health of workers, but also not affect the construction efficiency." Ma Xiaoli told reporters that the spray system he designed could be put into use soon.

Make every effort to help and guide

In November 2015, China Railway 21st Bureau established "Ma Xiaoli Model Worker Innovation Studio". In view of the difficulties in railway tunnel construction, the studio has successfully developed 25 sets of mechanical equipment in 10 types, including tunnel escape pipe self-propelled device, automatic welding machine for steel bar joints, tunnel construction cantilever trolley, and 8-bar bending machine. In January 2017, Ma Xiaoli's model innovation studio became the first batch of "China Railway Construction Model (Advanced Staff) Innovation Studios". In November 2020, the All China Railway Federation of Trade Unions awarded the studio the title of "locomotive model and craftsman talent innovation studio".

At present, the studio has gathered 15 key technical R&D personnel. They focus on construction and production problems, actively carry out technical breakthrough, technical innovation and technological invention, and form 47 various technological innovation achievements. More than 20 achievements have been widely promoted and applied, saving more than 20 million yuan for enterprises.

When Ma Xiaoli's model worker innovation studio was just established, Wang Xiaowen, a staff member of the company, joined in. As Ma Xiaoli's apprentice, he participated in the construction of the studio, system preparation and other work. At present, Wang Xiaowen has become the person in charge of "Ma Xiaoli Model Worker Innovation Work Point" of Meitai Expressway and Pingqing Railway Project, with 17 achievement patents.
