What kind of printer consumables is more worth choosing in the small healthy office class?

For the office workers who sit in the office for a long time, they stay in the office even longer than at home on weekdays. Therefore, the office white-collar workers are also very concerned about the health of the office environment. Ergonomic chairs, air purifiers, and several pots of green plants on their desks... Some workers are worried about the printer consumables used by the company.

What are printer consumables

Printer consumables mainly include ink cartridges, toner cartridges, etc. Ink cartridge is mainly used for ink-jet printer, which contains liquid ink. Its working principle is that ink-jet printer sprays ink onto paper through tiny nozzles to form words and images; The toner cartridge is mainly used for laser printers and contains toner. Its working principle is that the laser printer absorbs toner to the paper through static electricity, and then fixes toner to the paper through high-temperature heating.

At present, there are many kinds of consumables on the market, including original consumables, compatible consumables and filling consumables. These consumables vary in price, performance and health impact.  

Possible environmental health impact of printer consumables

Although the printer consumables seem harmless, if low-quality consumables made of cheap industrial chemical materials are used, a large number of substances harmful to health - TVOC and dust may be released during use.

TVOC is a general term for a class of organic compounds that can volatilize at room temperature. TVOC includes a variety of chemicals, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, formaldehyde, etc. If there is less ventilation in the office and TVOC concentration accumulates, these substances will have an irritant effect on human respiratory tract. Long term exposure may lead to headache, nausea, and eye and throat discomfort.  

In addition to TVOC, the laser printer will release particles such as dust when working. These particles can enter the alveoli and then enter the blood with breathing. If they are exposed to dust for a long time, they will cause respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, and even harm the cardiovascular system.  

Our country also has relevant requirements for TVOC value, styrene value and dust value of printer consumables. According to HJ 570-2010 Technical Requirements for Environmental Labeling Products - Powder Cartridge, the standard requirements for TVOC of monochrome consumables are ≤ 10mg/h, styrene is ≤ 1.0mg/h, and dust is ≤ 4.0mg/h. Comparison of environmental health between original consumables and compatible consumables

In order to explore the impact of original and compatible consumables on health, I came to Tianjin Reproduction Technology Research Institute, the National Office Equipment and Consumables Quality Inspection and Testing Center, to test the three consumables we selected.

We chose HP W1370 toner cartridge with high heat and two compatible toner cartridges, which are respectively compatible consumables of Caige and Tianwei, and the HP M233dw laser printer was used in the test.

Test data summary

The test results show that the test results of HP original consumables TVOC, styrene and dust are 2mg/h, 0.09mg/h and 0.3mg/h respectively, the test results of color grid compatible consumables are 6mg/h, 0.9mg/h and 1.3mg/h respectively, and the test results of Tianwei compatible consumables are 6mg/h, 0.9mg/h and 1.2mg/h respectively.

According to the national testing standards mentioned above, the three consumables meet the requirements. However, it is obvious that the three inspection values of HP original consumables are lower, which theoretically has less impact on people and the environment.  

The reason is not difficult to understand. The original consumables are usually designed and produced by the printer brand manufacturers, and their production processes are subject to strict quality control and safety testing to ensure that they can provide stable printing results while also meeting the standards of health and environmental protection. Based on this, we believe that original consumables are more worthy of selection.
