Intel CEO Pat Kissinger said recently that the factory near Magdeburg, Germany, will not only become the most advanced semiconductor production facility in Europe, but also the most advanced in the world.
Kissinger pointed out at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland: "This will not only be the most advanced manufacturing factory in Germany, but also the most advanced chip manufacturing in the world will be carried out in Magdeburg factory. We are very excited about this."
He added that the factory would produce Intel 18A chips and hinted that these technologies would be on the order of 1.5nm. "After the Magdeburg factory goes online, it will become the most advanced wafer factory in the world. This factory can not only produce our most advanced process technology (Intel 18A, below 2nm), but also surpass this level and can produce 1.5nm chips." Kissinger said.
It is understood that Intel will release its post 18A manufacturing process roadmap at the end of February, and may also outline which fabs will first adopt a node. It is reported that Intel 18A will launch Intel 16A and Intel 14A later.
It is worth noting that under rare circumstances in the semiconductor industry, Intel is determined to bring its leading manufacturing technology to Europe. At present, Intel is using Intel 4nm process technology to produce chips in the 34th factory near Leixlip, Ireland, and is expected to start producing Intel 3nm processors in the next few quarters.
Although Intel's 4nm and 3nm nodes are currently the company's most advanced, they lag behind TSMC's N3 (3nm). In contrast, Intel expects its 18A and its successor products to lead the industry in power consumption, performance and area characteristics.
