I have been practicing medicine for 28 years since I graduated from the university, and I have been engaged in the clinical and research of infectious diseases for more than 25 years. 28 years is enough to turn a young man into an old man. At the end of this year, I suddenly recalled living and struggling in this city for so many years. It seems that I just went to see doctors, make rounds and live a "life" as usual, but every detail also seems to constitute a life worth living.

Looking back on my youth, I have been struggling with anxiety and anxiety. When I graduated from college, my academic qualifications were more important. In order to have better development, I gave up the assigned Shanghai hukou quota and went to study for a master's degree instead. When I graduated from my master's degree, my household registration suddenly became important. In order to live better in Shanghai, I could support my family and children, and gave up the opportunity to study for a doctor. I went to find Professor Weng Xinhua, then the director of the Infection Department of Huashan Hospital and my later mentor, and hoped to be assigned to the Infection Department. At that time, the infection department was not very popular, and the whole discipline entered a low point of development. Many people resigned to work in foreign companies, giving me the opportunity to win the few clinical posts in Shanghai's first-class hospitals like Huashan Hospital every year. As a young man from other places who landed in a strange city, survival was the first priority, and his former ideal was temporarily forgotten. At that time, almost every step was faced with a choice, never having the best of both worlds, nor knowing what choice was right.

Just 23 years ago, I thought about giving up. At that time, it was almost impossible to live in Shanghai because the salary of the Infection Department was very low. I once resigned to Professor Weng Xinhua. The teacher said to respect my ideas, but let me hesitate again. Just because I hesitated, I couldn't bear to give up my desire to become a doctor for many years, which made me stick to it.

Life may be like this. It seems dull, but it will move forward little by little. I went to the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong for further study in 2001. This team later isolated the SARS virus (SARS coronavirus) in 2003, and was the first to isolate the new crown variant of Omikjon a few days ago. After SARS, I spent a year or two studying and working abroad in order to make clinical research and scientific research connect with the world more quickly. After returning, he continued to be a doctor. He spent every day in outpatient visits, ward rounds, and research. He also went to the countryside to treat MDR-TB patients in poor areas. Until the outbreak of COVID-19, I began to deal with COVID-19 every day with the team.

In retrospect, these experiences have helped me. Almost 30 years later, nothing seems to have changed. Only at this historic moment today, it seems that this persistence has been proved to be correct. At that time, the choices that were considered to be very common were suddenly linked together, and one by one uncertainty formed the result of certainty.

Every generation has its own challenges and destiny. Our generation once thought that it was the hardest to work, but now it seems that it has caught up with the era of rapid development. Today's young people are different. The country is at the best time in history.
