The four crossings of Chishui were the campaign of the Central Red Army against the Kuomintang troops in the Chishui River basin at the junction of Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan during the Long March. It was also the first campaign directed by Mao Zedong after he entered the decision-making core at the Zunyi Conference.

After the Zunyi Conference, the situation faced by the Central Red Army is still very serious. Chiang Kai shek mobilized about 400000 troops from Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan and the Central Military Headquarters to encircle and intercept, while the Red Army only had more than 30000 people. There was a great disparity in military strength and equipment between the two sides. It can be said that the Red Army has reached the critical point of survival again.

In order to get rid of the crisis and break the Kuomintang army's siege, the Central Red Army initially prepared to cross the Yangtze River north to meet the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army. To this end, on January 28, 1935, the Red Army had a fierce battle with the trailing Kuomintang Sichuan Army in Tucheng.

On February 24, the Zunyi Campaign kicked off. Taking Tongzi, Loushan Pass and Zunyi, the Red Army defeated and annihilated two divisions and eight regiments of the Kuomintang Army and captured a large number of military supplies within five days.

The Kuomintang army obeyed the "transfer", adjusted its deployment and rushed to southern Sichuan again. Since the goal of mobilizing the enemy had been achieved, Mao Zedong decided to take advantage of the fact that the new encirclement of the enemy would not be completed, and kill another rifle. The Red Army continued to lure the enemy to the west with a regiment disguised as the main force, while the real main force was from the evening of March 21 to 22, passing through the gaps between the enemies in all directions and crossing Chishui four times with concealed and rapid movements.
