mobile phone

Mobile phones can be used for long-distance wireless communication. It works by communicating with a nearby base station (also known as a "cellular site"), which connects it to the main telephone network. When moving, if the mobile phone is too far away from the cell it is connected to, the cell will send a message to another cell telling the new cell to take over the call. This is called "switching", and calls will continue to use the new phone connected to the phone. Handover is done so well and carefully that the user usually never knows that the call has been transferred to another cell.
