Born in January 1909 in Lianshui County, Jiangsu Province. He studied in the High School Attached to Nanjing Jinling University, Shanghai Lida Academy, Tongwen Academy, and finally graduated from Shanghai University of Arts. In 1931, he joined the Anti imperialist League. In 1932, he joined the "Left Wing Drama Federation". In August 1932, he was admitted to Shanghai Yingshang Bus Company as a conductor and soon joined the Communist Party of China. In 1933, he was arrested and sentenced for participating in the workers' strike. In 1935, he was released on bail and went to Malaysia to participate in the activities of the Malaysian Communist Party. He was officially informed and forced to leave the country.
After liberation, he successively held the posts of Vice President of Hunan Revolutionary University, Director of the Provincial Department of Culture and Education, Propaganda Minister of the Provincial Party Committee, President of Hunan University, etc. On January 8, 1987, he died of illness in Changsha at the age of 79.
