256 RISC-V core microcomputers have even achieved this level!

Recently, a netizen named bitluni demonstrated the production process of a mini "supercomputer" on social media. This computer consists of 256 RISC-V architecture cores, and is equipped with LED lights for testing and cool functions.

Previously, bituni tried to build a system called "super cluster". The system contains 16 CH32V003 RISC-V microcontrollers, which are connected through an 8-bit bus and equipped with LED lights. This project can be used for both testing and demonstration.

Recently, bituni challenged itself again, trying to integrate 16 super clusters into a "giant cluster", that is, 256 RISC-V microcontrollers. However, there are many difficulties in achieving this goal: each PCB has a large size and high power consumption.

To solve these problems, bituni designs it as a group of two super clusters and places them on eight so-called "cluster blades". In addition, each blade is also equipped with two CH32V203 microcontrollers to serve as the connection channel between each group of super clusters and the 8-bit bus.

After the design is completed, bitluni starts to manually install the microcontroller, weld GPIO pins, and conduct assembly tests. Finally, he put the whole system on the main circuit board.

However, in the process of testing with LED lights, bitluni found a design defect: no internal clock source was installed, which made the LED lights unable to flash synchronously. In order to solve this problem, he used his superb programming technology to solve the bus communication conflict, so that all microcontrollers can run synchronously.

The final result is that this mini computer is composed of 256 RISC-V microcontrollers, which operate at the frequency of 48MHz; In addition, there are 17 RISC-V chips operating at 144MHz; In addition, 640 GPIO pins and 256 ADC circuits are equipped. According to the single core frequency calculation, the average performance level of the whole system is 14.7GHz.
