At the age of over half a century, Li Lei Shi has opened up a new world in the field of nephrology. He is recognized as a medical leader, a pioneer and founder of modern nephrology in China, and the first brand in the field of nephrology in China.
Li Leishi was born in Liuyang, Hunan Province in October 1926. His life is legendary. He started work in April 1949, joined the army in April 1963, and was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. As a doctor, Li Leishi has benefited thousands of patients for more than 60 years. Li Lei Shi was ordered several times to rush to the front line to save the lives of officers and soldiers. He wears a straw hat and carries a medicine box every day. He takes the prevention and treatment team to the troops with a high incidence rate to test the blood of soldiers, do experiments, and collect specimens in the urinals, often hundreds of specimens a day.
As an internationally renowned nephrologist and one of the founders of the Chinese Society of Nephrology and the Asia Pacific Society of Nephrology, Li Lei Shi decided to start the study of kidney disease in 1978, when he was 52 years old. "People don't learn skills in middle age", not to mention changing careers when they are over 50 years old. Li Leishi thought simply that the prevention and control of schistosomiasis has been almost done, and there are more and more kidney patients in China, who need to be effectively treated.
As a teacher, Li Leishi has cultivated a number of backbone forces for the development of kidney disease in China for more than 60 years. In the eyes of students, Li Leishi is a strict teacher. Almost all students have been criticized by him, but he has never mentioned a patient. Everyone knows Li Leishi's famous saying: "Whoever can't deal with the patient, I can't deal with him!" Late one night, a patient suffered from abnormal bleeding after kidney transplantation surgery, and three persons in charge of the kidney transplantation team failed to arrive at the scene in time due to various reasons. After that, although the patient's family felt that the doctor had done his best, Li Lei Shi became angry when he knew about it. He specially organized personnel to conduct a comprehensive investigation, and disclosed his family's disgrace. Finally, he seriously dealt with the three clients he had trained himself. Li Leishi later said sadly: "Personal progress can be made up for, but human life is only once, and cannot be made up for."
Li Leishi was 74 years old when he suffered from bone metastasis from malignant tumor. On the night before the operation, his brother Li Jieshou sat in front of his hospital bed and talked for a long time. Later, Li Leishi recalled that this was the first time that the two brothers felt "old". However, what the two brothers talked about most was that life was limited, so they should turn it into a red candle to illuminate the way forward for future generations. His departure is a great loss for the academic community of nephrology, but his spirit as a scientist will inspire countless young people to rise bravely.
