A class of atoms whose kinetic energy is significantly higher than thermal energy. Because its energy is higher than the chemical bond energy, it can initiate chemical reactions. Ions accelerated by chemical accelerators and target nuclei in recoiled nuclear reactions or parent nuclei in nuclear decay can become high-energy atoms, and can also be formed in the interaction of ionizing radiation and matter.
