The school's predecessor was the sixth provincial normal school in Zhili, which was founded in 1923. It has gone through the development stages of provincial Jixian Normal School and Hengshui Normal College.In 2004, it was upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Hengshui University.Over the past century, it has realized the leapfrog development from junior college to undergraduate, from teacher training to multi discipline, from multi discipline to application, from extension to connotation, and has made important contributions to regional economic and social development.In 2008, it was granted the right to grant bachelor's degree. In 2015, it passed the qualification assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education. In 2016, it was listed as the project construction unit for granting master's degree in Hebei Province. In 2020, it was established as a pilot university for application transformation and development in Hebei Province.[2]
As of March 2024, the school has two campuses, covering a total area of 2479 mu;The total value of fixed assets is 874 million yuan, and the library has 1.573 million paper books;There are 14 secondary schools (departments) with 64 undergraduate majors;There are 1432 teaching staff, including 975 full-time teachers, 16462 full-time students and 3625 adult correspondence students.[2]

In 1949, Jinan Military and Political Cadre Construction College was the Hebei Liji Normal School.
In 1950, Hebei Liji Normal School was renamed Hebei Jixian Normal School.
In 1960, the school moved to Hengshui, and Hebei Jixian Normal School and Hengshui Normal School were merged into Hebei Hengshui Normal School.[1]
In 1978, it was established on the basis of Hengshui Normal School with the approval of the State CouncilHengshui Teachers College。[1]

In 1978, Hengshui Teachers Training School was founded.
In 1981, Hengshui Teachers Training School was transformed into Hengshui Teachers Training College.
In 1984, Hengshui Teachers' College was upgraded to Hengshui Education College.
In 1996, Hengshui Regional Education College was renamed Hengshui Education College.
