nineteenth century

Jeremy Bentham
University College London was officially established on February 11, 1826, formerly known as the University of London. It was originally established as a joint-stock company because it did not obtain the Royal Charter at first. [17] In October 1828, the school opened its doors to students for the first time and called itself the "University of London". From the very beginning, the university intended to open higher education to those who were excluded from the ancient universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Its first group of students included non believers, Jews, Catholics and others. thomas arnold (Thomas Arnold) described this third university in England as "the godless institution of Gol Street". [13] UCL is the first university in England to enroll students regardless of religious belief, and it is also a non boarding university. UCL enables more people in society to afford and accept higher education. The new university mainly attracts young people and boys from London's professional class (some are only 14 years old), and has established the first academic departments of chemistry, English, German and Italian in the UK. [133]
University College Hospital
Jeremy Bentham (Jeremy Bentham) is generally regarded as one of the founders of the University of London, which is the predecessor of today's University College London. In fact, Bentham was eighty years old when the new university opened in 1828, and he did not participate in the movement to establish it. However, although Bentham was not directly involved in the establishment of UCL, he still deserves to be regarded as his inspiration. Founders of the school, especially James Muller (James Mill, 1773-1836) and Henry Brougham (1778-1868) both respected him very much, and their projects reflected his many ideas about education and society. [14]
When the school was founded in 1828, its teaching team consisted of 24 professors. [13] In October, the school began to offer art, law and medicine courses. At first, there were about 250 students, 54 of whom were enrolled in medical school. It is mainly based on the teaching mode in Scotland, that is, lectures plus exercises and examinations, which is a deliberate departure from the old university. The school does not provide accommodation, thus avoiding controversial religious teaching issues. [135]
On November 28, 1836, the university obtained the Royal Charter and changed its name to University College London (UCL). On the same day, the new articles of association authorized a new University of London Established, this university has the right to King's College London (King's College London) students are awarded medical, art and law degrees. [17]
In 1837, the University College Hospital was established. It was originally established in 1834, formerly known as the North London Hospital. It is a place for medical students to carry out clinical training, and can accommodate 130 patients. [133]
In 1858, the school launched a new measure, all examinations and degrees (except medicine) in London were open to anyone, and the school's off campus examination system also took root [18] In 1867, the school's constitution allowed women to take examinations. In 1871, the school allowed women to attend classes with men, and opened the first coeducational university course in Britain. It was not until 1878 that a supplementary charter finally allowed women to obtain full degrees. [18]
In October 1871, Slade Academy of Fine Arts opened in the new north wing of the university [17] In 1884, the University College Bulletin became the first systematic student publication. [15]
On June 3, 1893, the Council of UCL approved the establishment of the Men's Alliance Association, which was the first version of UCL Student Union. In September 1893, the first group of students joined the Association. [16]

Twentieth Century

In 1900, University College London became a college of the University of London. Previously, the college was reorganized in accordance with the University of London Act of 1898, and merged into the University of London in 1907 in accordance with the University College London (Transfer) Act of 1905, renamed the University of London, University College), Subsequently, it was separated from the University of London according to the Royal Charter on December 9, 1977, and reorganized into University College London according to the University College Act of 1979, and the university's rights, properties and responsibilities related to the college were transferred to the college. [134]
In 1912, about a dozen women were appointed as academic staff, mainly in the departments of botany, chemistry, geology and applied statistics. [20] In 1917, women were admitted to medical schools for the first time. [17]
In 1956, Sir Harrie Massey, the head of the physics department of the university, led a team composed of British government and UCL scholars to successfully launch the first British science rocket. [9] In 1960, University College London became the first university in the UK to have a unit specializing in film research, led by Sorrod Dickinson. [20]
From 1986 to 1999, the Eastman Dental Institute, the Slavic and Eastern European Research Institutes, the Institute of Neurology and the Institute of Archaeology joined University College London. [133]

twenty-first century

Admission method

academic requirement
  • undergraduate:
The minimum entry requirement for the school is a cumulative GPA of 3.3/4.0 (or equivalent), but some subject areas require at least 3.7 and may have other prerequisites. [52] The school's A Level entry requirements are based on three A levels. According to the different degree courses, the required scores should be within the scope of AAA ABB. The school also accepts the International Baccalaureate (IBDP), BTEC Level III Extended Diploma, Cambridge University Foundation major subjects, Scottish high school and senior high school results, Welsh bachelor's degree, etc. to enter the school's curriculum. [55]
  • graduate student:
Each major has different admission requirements. However, research applicants usually need to hold a first or second class bachelor's degree or a recognized master's degree in a relevant discipline from a British university. They also accept overseas qualifications of the same standard as recognized higher education institutions. A few courses require the GMAT or GRE General Test. For some teaching courses, applicants with lower qualification standards may be admitted if they can prove that they have appropriate academic background and experience in relevant fields. [56]
English ability requirements
The language requirements for undergraduate and graduate applicants are similar. Any student who is not a native of an English speaking country must provide the latest proof of English language ability. Or the applicant may receive at least 12 months of academic education in a country where the University College London believes "English is the majority" to obtain the awarded qualification. [53-54] Applicants can also provide English language qualifications recognized by University College London. The school's English language requirements are Level 1 to 5. School logo

  • banner
The visual image of UCL is unusual because the school does not use traditional signs. Banners must appear in all University College London newsletters, and remain unchanged and completely clear. The porch sign, located on the left side of U, is a tribute to the landmark Wilkins Building of University College London and the previous logo and stamp of University College London. The slogan is always placed in the upper left corner of the banner. The default slogan is: London Global University. However, this can be changed to a college or department. Two levels of information are allowed, up to three lines. [101]
banner
  • logo
When UCL cooperates with other organizations, or when banners cannot be used, the school will use the logo. Just like the UCL banner, the UCL letters in the logo are cut to reveal the background color or image below. The porch shall be kept white or black, and the background color shall not be used. Make sure there is sufficient contrast between the background color and the logo. [102]
  • mascot
