Hainan coconut carving is a traditional carving art made of coconut shell, coconut wood and coconut palm. It was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.

"From the first time I saw coconut carving, I liked this skill," said Ke Qiufeng, a 51 year old provincial representative inheritor of Hainan coconut carving. He joined the former Haikou Coconut Carving Craft Factory in 1994. After ten years of learning from the masters of the factory, he began to make coconut carving handicrafts on his own.

Ke Qiufeng introduced that coconut carving can make not only decorative paintings, vases and ornaments, but also bowls, ladles, tissue boxes, tea cans and many other daily necessities. A coconut carving product is usually made through design, material selection, polishing, cutting, carving, inlaying and painting.

Press the coconut shell with the left hand and hold the knife with the right hand, and carve the texture on the surface of the hard and curved coconut shell centimeter by centimeter. This is the most common action of Ke Qiufeng when creating coconut sculptures. He said that coconut carving must be concentrated, and a slight carelessness in carving will lead to deviation and laceration of the palm or arm. He has been engaged in coconut carving for more than 20 years, leaving many scars on his hands and arms.

In addition to making coconut carvings by himself, Ke Qiufeng also teaches coconut carving skills to students of Hainan Vocational and Technical College every week, so that the traditional skill of coconut carving can continue to be passed on.
