Earth Sciences lends itself to many different roles across a range of industries.

Within academia, graduates of the department are working in roles from Postdoctoral Researcher to Professor, within Earth Sciences, Geography and Environment, and Physics departments around the world. OurResearch Careerspage offers links to a range of academic job portals and more.

In industry, many of our alumni work in oil and gas, mining, risk management, financial services and other computational, modelling roles.

In government and third sector agencies, alumni work in environmental , diplomatic, advisory and consultancy roles.

According to the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey 2012-2014, Oxford Earth Scientists earn an average of £33,000 per year within 6 months of graduating. Alongside the Saïd Business School, that makes our leavers among the best-paid of all Oxford graduates.

OUGS Careers Fair

Every year the student society, Oxford University Geology Society, hosts a careers fair in the department, inviting alumni and other contacts in key organisations to speak to undergraduates, graduates and postdocs about their career opportunities. Alumni are welcome to attend as employers, recruiters, job-seekers or networkers.
